What this usually is
A Walsh that will not start points first at control lock, child lock or delay start set. Work out whether the panel lights at all before anything else: that single fact halves the list. Nothing here needs the machine pulled out until the last cause.
The symptoms, and their near misses
- The panel is completely dark and nothing responds — No power reaching the machine, or an internal fuse has gone.
- The panel lights but pressing start does nothing — The machine has power and is refusing, which is a different fault entirely.
- NEAR MISS: it runs a full cycle but cleans nothing — Read the cleaning page instead.
What it usually turns out to be, in order
- Control lock, child lock or delay start set — A key symbol on the panel, or a delay set by a child pressing buttons, leaves a machine that lights up, accepts nothing and looks broken. First, and the whole order below follows from it: it is free to rule out and it is the answer far more often than anyone expects on a machine with a touch panel.
- A door latch that is not fully engaging — The machine will not run unless the latch tells it the door is shut. Second on this unit, because it is a mechanical part operated several times a day and it is the single most common reason a dishwasher refuses to start.
- A failing touch panel or membrane — Touch panels fail where they are pressed most. Third, once the two above are clean: it is the part that takes every press and the only cause here that behaves differently at different times of day.
- A failed door switch or thermal fuse — The switch behind the latch and the thermal fuse on the board are both safety interruptions in the circuit. Bottom of the list, deliberately: it needs the door panel off and a meter, which is where owner work stops.
Check in this order, and why
- Look for a lock symbol or a delay indicator on the display — Both are easy to set by accident and easy to clear.
- Close the door firmly and listen for the latch to click home — If it starts only when pushed hard, you have found it.
- Try every button and note which respond — Some working and some dead is the membrane, not the board.
Owner-side checks, step by step
- Hold the lock button for a few seconds to clear a control lock, then cancel any delay start — Then try a cycle from a fresh start.

- Push the racks fully in, close the door firmly and listen for a positive click — Check nothing, including a tall handle, is holding the door off its catch.

Before you open anything
Safety
Switch the dishwasher off at its breaker or unplug it before removing any panel, and never take the inner door panel off with the machine live: the door switch circuit is mains voltage. A standard household branch circuit is fifteen or twenty amps at one hundred and twenty volts, so a dishwasher that trips its breaker is telling you something real. Never wedge or tape a door latch to make a machine run.
The line between a fix and a service call
Call once the latch clicks home, the power is confirmed at the switch, the controls are unlocked and the supply is open, because what is left is behind the door panel or on the board. Call immediately if the machine trips its breaker or smells hot.
