The short answer
What this symptom means on a Vesta dryer depends on how the dryer is built, and on this one the order runs like this. First — The door switch is not making. Last, and the only one that is a technician's job from the outset — A thermal fuse that has opened. Start at the top: those checks are free and need nothing opened.
What you actually observe
- Nothing at all when you press start — Either no supply or an open safety device.
- The panel lights and the drum never turns — The machine is waiting for a condition.
- It starts and stops within seconds — A door switch that is only just making.
- NEAR MISS: it runs but never heats — That is a heating fault and it belongs on a different page.
Causes, most likely first on this build
- The door switch is not making — A dryer will not run with the door open, and the switch that proves it is shut is pressed on every single cycle. Worn, it leaves a machine with power, lights and no motion at all. Ranked first on a Vesta: a value build gives you the least margin exactly where the load is highest, so the overloaded case is the normal case.
- Half or all of the supply missing — An electric dryer runs its motor and its element from different legs. Second here, because a light cabinet transmits everything it cannot absorb, which turns an installation problem into what sounds like a mechanical one.
- A worn start button — The start button is a membrane switch pressed thousands of times over the machine's life. Third, once the two above are clean: it is quick, free and it settles whether anything needs opening.
- A thermal fuse that has opened — On many machines the same fuse feeds the motor circuit, so an overheat caused by a blocked vent leaves a dryer that will not start at all rather than one that will not heat. Last, and the reason the order above matters: it is the least likely of the four and the only one that is a service call from the first minute.
Check in this order, and why
- Open and close the door firmly and listen for the click — No click, no start, on every machine.
- Reset both halves of the breaker fully — Half a supply can leave a machine that will not turn.
- Note whether it takes several presses to start — A button that is going gives warning first.

- Check how the machine stands and what it is standing on before anything else — A compact machine on a flat floor behaves; the same machine on an uneven one produces most of the complaints on this list.

Safety
Switch the machine off at its breaker or unplug it, and shut both taps, before opening any panel or filter. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off.
When to call a technician
Call when the breaker is fully reset, the door latches, no lock is set and the machine is still dead. A switch, a fuse or a belt is inexpensive in parts and it is the labour to reach it that decides whether the repair is worth making.
