The short answer
On a Unbrand microwave, a microwave that does nothing when you press start is usually a door, a lock or a supply problem — and those are the only three an owner should investigate. - NEAR MISS — it runs but the food stays cold — That is a heating fault and it has its own page.
Causes, most likely first on this microwave
- No power at the outlet, or a tripped breaker — Ranked first on Unbrand: an unbranded oven is often on an extension lead or a shared outlet, and both are the first thing to eliminate. On this one, remember that there is no service literature to fall back on, so everything here is decided by observation.
- The oven is doing what it was asked, which is nothing — Second: a counting display with no heat is a kitchen timer, not a fault.
- Child lock or control lock is set — Third: a locked oven lights up, beeps and refuses, which is a refusal rather than a failure.
- Control board or keypad membrane failing — Bottom of the list, which is the useful part: with no literature and no part numbers, a keypad fault on an unbranded oven is usually the end of the machine rather than a repair.
Check in this order, and why
- First — test the outlet with a lamp and check the breaker — A dead outlet and a dead oven look identical from the front.
- Then — watch the display: is it counting down without the fan or the light running? — That is a timer, and it is the cheapest cause on this page.
- Third — look for a lock symbol on the display and try a long press on the stop button — It costs nothing and it is the commonest reason a working oven does nothing.
- Only then — note whether every button is dead or only some of them — Some working and some not is a keypad; all dead is a supply or a lock, which is why it comes after everything above it.

- Test the outlet with a lamp — Plug a lamp into the same outlet and leave it on. Do not run the oven from an extension lead.

A microwave holds a high-voltage capacitor that can carry a lethal charge long after the oven is unplugged, so nothing inside the case is an owner job — not the fuse, not the panel, not the magnetron. Every check on this page is outside the case. Never defeat, tape or pack a door interlock to make an oven run: those switches are what stop the oven radiating with the door open. Never run the oven empty, and stop using it altogether if the door is damaged, does not close square, or if the oven runs at all with the door open.
When it stops being an owner job
Call, or replace the oven, once the door, the lock, the outlet and the entry have all been cleared. Everything left is behind the capacitor. Stop using the oven immediately and call if it ran with the door open, if the door is damaged or will not close square, if there was a bang or a burning smell before it died, or if it trips a breaker.
