The short answer
On a Toscana refrigerator, an ice maker that has stopped is a water problem far more often than it is an ice maker problem. Work from the tap towards the mould: supply, fill, freeze, harvest. Units that arrive through a furniture channel are more often sited badly — in an alcove, against a wall, or in a garage — and siting drives the first two causes below.
What you are actually seeing
- Ice is produced but tastes or smells wrong — That is a filter and storage question, not a production one.
- A sheet of ice is forming under the bin — Water is arriving where it should not, which belongs on the leak page.
- NEAR MISS — the dispenser gives no water either — Then the fault is common to both and it is upstream: supply, filter or valve, not the ice maker.
Causes, most likely first on this refrigerator
- No supply: the shut-off, the line or the connection behind the unit — Ranked first on Toscana: it is the first thing in the chain, it is free to check, and moving the cabinet for any other reason is the commonest way the line gets kinked. On this one, remember that these units are sited by whoever delivered the furniture, so start with where it stands.
- Fill tube frozen shut, so each fill freezes before it arrives — Second: the fill tube on these platforms is short and unheated, so any restriction upstream turns into a frozen tube within a day.
- A fill valve that no longer opens reliably — Third: it needs the supply and the filter cleared before it can be blamed, and it is the first part on this list that is not an owner job.
- Ice maker module, motor or mould heater — Last, and that is the point of the order: it is the part everybody replaces first and the part that is actually at fault least often, which is the whole reason for this order.
Check in this order, and why
- First — follow the water line from the shut-off to the back of the cabinet — Every fault downstream of this looks identical, so clearing the supply first saves the rest of the list.
- Then — look into the fill tube at the back of the ice maker for a plug of ice — Finding ice here tells you the original fault was upstream, which is why the supply and filter come first.
- Only then — only once supply, filter, fill tube and freezer temperature are all clean — Everything above it produces the same nothing-in-the-bin, and all of it is cheaper, which is why it comes after everything above it.
What an owner can safely check
- Check the shut-off is open and the line is not kinked or crushed — Trace the line from the valve to the cabinet. Straighten any tight bend and make sure the cabinet is not standing on it.
Tools: torchAbout 10 min
- Clear a frozen fill tube with warm water and a cloth — Switch the ice maker off, ease warm water onto the tube with a cloth until it clears, and mop up. Never use a sharp tool or a heat gun.
Tools: cloth, warm waterAbout 20 min
- STOP here if the next thing to check is behind a fixed panel — Everything above can be done without tools on live parts. Past this point it is a technician job.
Before you open anything
Safety
Switch the ice maker off before you put a hand near the mould — a harvest cycle starts on a timer and the ejector moves without warning. Unplug the cabinet before removing any panel. Never clear a frozen fill tube with a heat gun, a hair dryer on high or a screwdriver: warm water on a cloth is the only safe way, and the plastic behind that tube melts long before ice does.
When it stops being an owner job
Call once supply, filter, fill tube and freezer temperature are all clean and the bin is still empty — at that point the fault is in the valve or the module and both need the panel off. Call sooner if water is arriving somewhere it should not, if the cabinet is also failing to hold temperature, or if the fill tube refreezes within a day of being cleared, which means the original restriction is still there.

This page is written for the Toscana refrigerator as a class, not for one family or one model line. Where a family-specific page exists for your unit it is linked above and it is the more specific answer. Deliberately not here: part numbers, wiring colours, torque figures and any measured value, all of which differ by family.
