- Water only after a defrost cycle — That ties the water directly to the drain path rather than to a supply line.
- A wet patch behind the unit — Points at the drain pan rather than at anything inside the cabinet.
- NEAR MISS: water plus soft food — Cooling first. The water is a consequence of the cabinet being too warm.
Causes, most likely first on this build
- The cabinet tilted so water runs out instead of down — The drain trough only works if the cabinet sits as the designer intended. Tilted forward, meltwater goes to the door. First on Thermador because a flush-set unit is levelled once at install, and the cabinet keeps whatever error was built in that day.
- A sagging hinge holding the door off the frame — The gasket cannot seal what the hinge will not close. The leak is condensation and the hinge is the reason for it. Second, because this platform senses what a simpler one switches, and its doors are heavy enough to move the geometry.
- A cracked or displaced drain pan — The pan under the unit evaporates what the drain delivers. Out of its seat or cracked, it puts it on the floor instead. Third, once the two above are clean: the heavier the unit, the more the install carries, and a heavy unit settles into its feet over time.
- A blocked defrost drain — Every defrost makes meltwater that has to reach the pan. Blocked, it backs up over the cabinet floor and out of the door. Last, and the order is the point: water that cannot leave comes back, and it comes back somewhere you did not choose.
Check in this order, and why
- Check the tilt with a level across the base — Free to check, free to correct, and it explains a leak that follows a defrost.
- Watch the door close under its own weight and look at the gap at the top corner — A gap that is wider at one corner is a hinge, not a gasket.
- Pull the unit out and look at the pan underneath — A pan off its seat is visible immediately and costs nothing to correct.

- Level the cabinet, giving it the very slight backward lean the drain expects — This also helps a door swing closed rather than resting ajar.

Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Get help before pulling the cabinet out: a loaded unit runs away from you on a hard floor and the supply line behind it tears easily. Never open sealed-system tubing.
When to call a technician
Call when the drain will not clear with warm water, when the pan is cracked, or when the door will not pull up to the frame. Call the same day for water reaching the cord or a socket. A freezer holds food safely at 0 degrees F (-18 degrees C) or below, and a long defrost costs you that either way.
