The short answer
What you are seeing on a Sunbeam refrigerator most often comes back to a door gasket letting humid room air in, with a cracked, displaced or overfull drain pan behind it. Work the order below rather than the price list: the cheap causes here are also the common ones.
What you are seeing
- Water pooling on the floor in front of the unit — The most reported version, and the least informative: water travels before it shows, so the puddle is rarely under the source.
- Water standing under the crisper drawers — A classic signature. Water that should have gone down the defrost drain has backed up into the cabinet instead.
- NEAR MISS: water only appears when the dispenser is used — That is the dispenser line or its fitting, not the defrost system.
What it usually turns out to be, in order
- A door gasket letting humid room air in — Warm air meeting cold surfaces condenses. A gap at the seal produces water continuously and looks exactly like a leak. It leads on Sunbeam: a mechanically switched unit runs its motors directly and seals with rubber that has aged on the calendar.
- A cracked, displaced or overfull drain pan — The pan under the unit is meant to evaporate what the drain delivers. Cracked or knocked out of place, it delivers it to the floor. Second, because a compact unit is carried in and set down, never really installed, and nobody re-checks it once it is loaded.
- An inlet valve that no longer closes fully — A valve holding partly open passes a trickle continuously, and the water appears at the back rather than at the front. Third on this build, because the valve is switched directly rather than managed, so it takes the full duty every time and wears accordingly.
- The cabinet tilted so water runs the wrong way — The drain trough only works if the cabinet leans very slightly back. Tilted forward, meltwater runs into the cabinet instead. Last, which is why it is checked last: the feet and the frame are the cheapest parts here, so the install drifts sooner than on a heavier machine.
The order to work in
- Run the paper test around both doors — It distinguishes water that is condensing from water that is escaping.
- Pull the unit out and look at the pan under the compressor — A pan out of its seat is visible in seconds and free to fix.
- Shut the supply at the tap for a day and see whether the water stops — A free test that rules the whole supply side in or out.
Owner checks, in order
- Test the gaskets with a sheet of paper around both doors, then wash the seal and the frame — Sticky residue holds a gasket open more often than perished rubber does.
Tools: a sheet of paper, warm soapy waterAbout 15 min
- Pull the unit forward and check the drain pan is seated, whole and not overflowing — Look for a crack at the corners. An overfull pan on a cool day is normal, a cracked one never is.
Tools: a torchAbout 20 min
- Shut the water supply off at the tap for a day — No water afterwards means the fault is on the supply side, and that is a part, not a clean.
About 10 min
- STOP HERE if the next step means a meter on the inlet valve terminals — Testing a valve coil with the machine live is where an owner check ends and a service call begins.
Safety first, and it is not a formality
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Get help before pulling the cabinet out: a loaded unit runs away from you on a hard floor and the supply line behind it tears easily. Never open sealed-system tubing.
Where the owner fix ends
Call when the drain will not clear with warm water, when the pan is cracked, or when water keeps arriving after the supply has been off for a day. Call the same day for water near the power cord or a socket: that is not something to leave running while you work through a list.

What is deliberately not on this page
This page is about the Sunbeam refrigerator as a class, not one family or model line. Where a family-specific page exists for your unit it is linked below and it is the more precise answer. Not here on purpose: drain routing diagrams, valve part numbers and heater specifications, which differ between families.
