The short answer
A dryer that will not start is usually being stopped by a door switch, a breaker or a thermal cut-out rather than by a failure. On this machine the first suspect is door switch not confirming.
What you observe
- The panel is completely dark — No power at all, which on a dryer often means one leg of the supply.
- The panel lights but the drum does not turn — Power is present and something is stopping the motor.
- It hums but the drum does not move — The motor is being asked to turn a drum that will not.
- NEAR MISS — it runs but the clothes stay wet — That is a heating or venting failure, and it has its own page.
Causes, most likely first on a Smad dryer
- Door switch not confirming — A dryer will not run with the door open, so a worn switch or a misaligned door stops it entirely. Ranked first on a Smad dryer: a machine that starts when the door is pushed hard has already told you where the fault is.
- Breaker, one leg of the supply, or the plug — Lose one leg and the drum may turn with no heat, or the machine may be completely dead.
- Thermal cut-out opened after a blocked vent — A dryer that has overheated opens a cut-out, and some do not reset by themselves.
- Control lock, delayed start or a programme not confirmed — A long press sets a lock on most machines, and the indicator is small.
Check in this order, and why
- Close the door firmly and listen for the switch click — Press the door firmly shut and try start again.
- Check both halves of the breaker and reset it fully off and on — Push it fully to off before resetting: a half-reset looks on and is not.
- Ask whether the machine ran unusually hot or long before it stopped — Check the lint filter and the duct before anything else.
What an owner can safely check
- Close the door firmly, listening for the switch, and check the door sits square in its opening — A machine that starts when the door is pressed has a switch or an alignment fault rather than a control one.
About 10 min
- Switch the dryer breaker fully off and then on again, both halves together — A large appliance circuit is typically 30 A or higher at 240 V, and a partly tripped breaker looks set when it is not.

- STOP HERE if the next step needs a panel off, a meter on live terminals, or the gas train — That is where the owner checks end; gas and high-current work are never owner work.

Safety
Unplug the dryer or switch off its breaker before any panel comes off — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off, and a large appliance circuit is typically 30 A or higher at 240 V. Lint is the fire risk on this appliance: clean the filter every load and clear the duct behind the machine. If yours is a gas dryer and you smell gas, do not switch anything on or off, leave the building, and call the gas utility or 911 from outside. Do not look for the leak yourself.
When to call a technician
Call once the door, the breaker, the lint path and the control lock are all proved and the machine still refuses, because what is left is the door switch, the start circuit, a thermal fuse or the belt — all behind a panel. If your unit is an absorption model running on gas, the gas side is not owner work: a licensed gas technician handles the burner, the flue and any smell of gas.

What this page does not cover
This is the generalised Smad dryer page. A family- or model-specific page, where one exists, is linked above and is the more precise answer for your unit. Left out on purpose: part numbers, connector colours, the order panels come off in, and every torque figure — a generalised page cannot be right about any of them.
