The answer first
A dryer that will not dry has usually lost airflow rather than heat. On this machine the first suspect is lint filter blocked, or a film on the mesh.
What you observe
- Clothes are damp and hot at the end of a cycle — Heat is being made and not carried away: airflow.
- Clothes are cool and damp at the end — No heat at all, which is a different fault from the one above.
- The cycle takes two or three times as long as it used to — A gradual restriction rather than a sudden failure.
- NEAR MISS — it will not start at all — That is a start failure, and the wont-start page ranks its causes.
Causes, most likely first on a Smad dryer
- Lint filter blocked, or a film on the mesh — A filter that looks clean can carry an invisible film from fabric softener that halves the airflow. Ranked first on a Smad dryer: airflow is what dries clothes, and the filter is the first thing in its way.
- One leg of the electrical supply lost — A breaker tripped on one side only produces this exactly.
- Vent duct blocked, crushed or too long — This is both the commonest cause of poor drying and the fire risk in the appliance.
- Outside vent flap stuck, blocked or full of lint — The flap at the outside wall jams with lint, paint, ice or a bird's nest, which stops the air leaving.
Check in this order, and why
- Hold the filter under a running tap and see whether the water passes straight through — Clean it with warm soapy water and a soft brush.
- Switch the dryer breaker fully off and on, both halves together — A large appliance circuit is typically 30 A or higher at 240 V, and a double breaker can trip on one side.
- Disconnect the duct at the machine and run a short cycle — Good drying with the duct off proves the duct is the restriction.
What an owner can safely check
- Wash the lint filter in warm soapy water with a soft brush and rinse it until water runs straight through — A filter that holds water holds air too. Do this whenever softener sheets are used.

- Push the dryer breaker fully to off and then back on, both halves together — A half-tripped breaker looks set and is not, and it gives a dryer that tumbles without ever heating.

- STOP HERE if the next step needs a panel off, a meter on live terminals, or the gas train — That is where the owner checks end; gas and high-current work are never owner work.
Before you open anything
Safety
Isolate the dryer at the breaker before a panel comes off and let any capacitor bleed down. Treat lint as fuel: the filter every load, the duct on a schedule, and never run the machine with the duct disconnected. On a gas dryer, a smell of gas means do not switch anything on or off, leave the building and call the gas utility or 911 from outside — never search for the leak yourself.
When to call a technician
Owner work is the whole lint path: filter, duct, flap and the load itself. Elements, igniters, gas valves, thermostats and thermal fuses are a technician's job. Stop using the machine if you smell scorching. If your unit is an absorption model running on gas, the gas side is not owner work: a licensed gas technician handles the burner, the flue and any smell of gas.

What this page does not cover
This page covers the Smad dryer as a class, not one family or model line. Where a family- or model-specific page exists for your unit it is linked above and it is the better answer — read it first. Deliberately not here: part numbers, wiring colours, panel removal order and torque figures, all of which differ between families under one nameplate.
