The answer first
Warm air in a cabinet that is plainly running is a delivery problem before it is a production problem. On this machine the first thing to look at is defrost cycle stalled, evaporator iced over.
What you observe
- The cabinet is warm but the unit is plainly running — The signature of lost airflow rather than lost cooling.
- The freezer side is cold and the fresh-food side is not — Cold is being made and not delivered — an air path, a damper or a fan.
- A solid sheet of frost on the freezer's back wall — Not the usual dusting; that sheet is what the air cannot get through.
- NEAR MISS — the unit is silent and nothing is cold — That is a power or start-relay fault and a different page. If you hear nothing at all, go there.
Causes, most likely first on a Simzlife refrigerator
- Defrost cycle stalled, evaporator iced over — The evaporator behind the freezer rear panel ices up over weeks until the air cannot get through it. Ranked first on a Simzlife refrigerator: it fails quietly, so the symptom arrives weeks late and looks like a compressor fault.
- Evaporator fan not moving air — A worn or seized evaporator fan gives the same warm cabinet as an ice block, with no frost to show for it.
- Condenser coil blanketed in dust — The coil rejects the heat the cabinet takes out, and under a dust blanket it cannot.
- Door seal leaking, or a door not closing — A seal that has lost its grip pulls humid air in all day, warming the cabinet and feeding the frost.
Check in this order, and why
- Take the freezer rear panel off, or look through its vents, for frost — Frost on the back wall confirms the airflow cause in one look.
- Open the freezer and listen for the fan, holding the door switch in — A fan you can hear rules out half the list; silence narrows it the other way.
- Pull the unit out and look at the coil at the back or underneath — A visible mat of dust is both the diagnosis and the job.
What an owner can safely check
- Empty the freezer into coolers, switch off, and let the cabinet stand open for a full manual defrost — Cooling that returns afterwards and fades again over days is the defrost system, not the compressor.
Tools: coolers, towelsAbout 45 min
- Hold the freezer door switch in and listen at the rear panel — A steady whirr means the air path is the fault; a click, a rattle or silence points at the fan itself.
About 10 min
- STOP HERE if the next check needs a panel off or a meter on live terminals — That is where the owner checks end and a service call begins, whatever the ranking says.
Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the refrigerator or switch off its breaker before removing any panel — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Leave the door switch wired as you found it. Never take a knife, a screwdriver or a heat gun to frost on an evaporator: the tubing behind it is thin, pressurised, and a puncture ends the appliance. Empty a loaded cabinet before you move it.
When to call a technician
Call once the checks above are clean, because what is left sits behind a panel or on the refrigerant side, and refrigerant work is licensed work. Call immediately, without finishing the list, if you smell burning or see oil around the compressor: oil outside the tubing means the system is open. Generic internals cut both ways: no brand support, but an independent technician can usually match the part from a catalogue rather than from the manufacturer.

What this page does not cover
This page covers the Simzlife refrigerator as a class, not one family or model line. Where a family- or model-specific page exists for your unit it is linked above and it is the better answer — read it first. Deliberately not here: part numbers, wiring colours, panel removal order and torque figures, all of which differ between families under one nameplate.
