In short
An ice maker that has stopped is almost always a water problem rather than a broken ice maker. On this machine the first suspect is freezer not cold enough to trigger a harvest.
What you observe
- The bin is empty and the maker is silent — No cycle is being attempted, which points at a switch, an arm or a sensor.
- Cubes are small, hollow or half-formed — Water is arriving but not enough of it — a restriction rather than a stoppage.
- A thin sheet of ice across the bottom of the bin — Water reached the mould and overflowed, which is a fill or a level problem.
- NEAR MISS — ice is fine but water dispenses slowly — That is the filter or the supply pressure, and it usually shows at the dispenser before the ice maker.
Causes, most likely first on a Simplicity refrigerator
- Freezer not cold enough to trigger a harvest — The mould must reach its harvest temperature before cubes are ejected, and a marginal freezer never gets there. Ranked first on a Simplicity refrigerator: a marginal freezer produces exactly this symptom while the ice maker itself is perfectly healthy.
- Fill tube frozen — The short tube that carries water into the mould can freeze solid, so each cycle adds a little more ice.
- Inlet valve not opening — A valve screen silted up behind the connection restricts the fill without the valve itself failing.
- Water filter clogged, overdue or not seated — A filter at the end of its life passes enough water for a slow glass and not enough for an ice mould.
Check in this order, and why
- Put a thermometer in the freezer and read it after several hours — Check the door seal at the same time: a leaking freezer door shows up here first.
- Look at the fill tube where it enters the mould for a plug of ice — A visible plug is the diagnosis and warm air is the cure.
- Listen for a short buzz and a fill sound at the back during a cycle — Silence at fill time points at the valve or its wiring.
What an owner can safely check
- Leave a freezer thermometer in the cabinet overnight and read it in the morning — A freezer holds food safely at 0 °F (−18 °C) or below. Warmer than that and the ice maker is not the fault.
Tools: freezer thermometerAbout 20 min
- Clear the fill tube with warm air or a cloth soaked in warm water, never with anything sharp — Warm the tube until the plug melts and the water runs into the mould rather than over it.
Tools: hairdryer on low, warm clothAbout 25 min
- STOP HERE if the next check needs a panel off or a meter on live terminals — That is where the owner checks end and a service call begins, whatever the ranking says.
Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the refrigerator or switch off its breaker before removing any panel — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Leave the door switch wired as you found it. Never take a knife, a screwdriver or a heat gun to frost on an evaporator: the tubing behind it is thin, pressurised, and a puncture ends the appliance. Empty a loaded cabinet before you move it.
When to call a technician
The owner work ends at the water path: line, valve, filter, arm and fill tube. The inlet valve, the module and the mould heater are a technician's job, and so is any leak you find while checking. These machines are genuinely repairable and the common parts are generic, so a repair is usually the economic choice unless the sealed system is involved.

What this page does not cover
This page covers the Simplicity refrigerator as a class, not one family or model line. Where a family- or model-specific page exists for your unit it is linked above and it is the better answer — read it first. Deliberately not here: part numbers, wiring colours, panel removal order and torque figures, all of which differ between families under one nameplate.
