The answer first
Most new freezer noises come from something touching something else, or from a cabinet that has been moved. On this cabinet the first suspect is frost touching the fan or the shelving. Locate the noise before you price a part: where it comes from matters far more than what it sounds like.
What you observe
- A buzz from the back or the base that comes and goes — The compressor or its mounts, and the timing tells you which.
- A rattle that stops when you press on the cabinet — Panel or tubing resonance rather than a failing part.
- A knock once or twice an hour — Expansion, or a defrost cycle starting on a frost-free cabinet.
- NEAR MISS — the noise is only when the lid is opened — Hinge or lid hardware, which is a nuisance rather than a fault.
Causes, most likely first on a Simplicity freezer
- Frost touching the fan or the shelving — It is the cabinet telling you about a frost load before the temperature does. Ranked first on a Simplicity freezer: frost is the thing that grows in a freezer, so it is the thing that eventually touches something.
- Evaporator fan, on a frost-free upright — A dry fan bearing chirps or whines whenever the compressor runs.
- Cabinet not level, or touching a wall — Out of level, the cabinet rocks on two feet and every vibration becomes a knock.
- Drain pan or base tray vibrating — On cabinets with a pan under the compressor, a tray out of position buzzes in time with the compressor.
Check in this order, and why
- Look for frost on the rear panel, the vents or the shelf supports — Defrosting the cabinet usually settles both.
- Hold the door closed on its switch and listen at the rear panel — A chest freezer has no such fan, so this cause does not apply.
- Push gently on the top corners and check the clearance behind — Any rock means the feet need adjusting.
What an owner can safely check
- Empty the cabinet, switch it off and defrost it completely, then dry it before restarting — If the noise goes with the frost, it was the frost. Never chip or pry at it.

- Level the cabinet on its feet and pull it far enough forward that nothing touches the wall — A cabinet standing square with clear air behind it loses most of its noise immediately.

- Switch off, check the base tray or drain pan is seated square in its rails, and reseat it — A pan simply out of position is a free fix; a cracked one is a cheap part.

- STOP HERE if the next check needs a panel off or a meter on live terminals — That is where the owner checks end and a service call begins, whatever the ranking says.
Before you open anything
Safety
Disconnect power before opening anything and let any capacitor bleed down before you reach past a board. Frost comes off with warm air and time, never with a blade. Sealed-system and refrigerant work is licensed work and is never an owner job. Empty a loaded freezer before you move it.
When to call a technician
Levelling, reseating a tray, clearing frost and easing a contact point are all owner work. A fan behind the rear panel, a compressor mount or a failing bearing is not. These machines are genuinely repairable and the common parts are generic, so a repair is usually the economic choice unless the sealed system is involved.
