The short answer
A dryer that tumbles without heating is very often reporting its vent rather than a failed heater, because a restricted duct trips the protection that cuts the heat while leaving the motor running. The vent is free to check and it is also the thing most worth checking. On a Safemate dryer the cause that ranks first is vent restricted or too long.
What you observe
- The drum turns normally and the air is cold — The classic separation: motor circuit intact, heat circuit not.
- It heated, stopped heating, then heated again after cooling — A protective device opening and resetting, which is a vent story until proved otherwise.
- Clothes take several cycles to dry but do get warm — A partial restriction rather than a complete heat failure.
- NEAR MISS — it does not tumble either — That is a will-not-start fault and belongs on that page.
Causes, most likely first on a Safemate dryer
- Vent restricted or too long — A blocked duct or a stuck outside flap traps hot air, the machine overheats and its protection cuts the heat while the drum keeps turning. Ranked first on this dryer, because it is the commonest cause of no heat, it is free to check, and it is the fire-risk item on the page.
- Thermal fuse open — A one-shot fuse opens on overheat and stays open. Ranked second on this dryer, because it is extremely common and it is the direct consequence of the cause above it.
- Heating element open — An element that has burned through gives no heat at all with everything else normal.
- Cycling thermostat failed — A thermostat that has failed open stops the heat while the machine runs on.
Check in this order, and why
- Pull the duct off the back and run a short cycle open to the room — Heat returning with the duct off names the cause without any part.
- Note whether heat stopped suddenly and has never come back — A one-shot fuse gives exactly that history.
- Leave this to a technician once the vent and the breaker are clear — Element testing is meter work.

- Unplug the machine, pull the duct off the back, clear the whole run and check the outside flap opens — Replace any crushed flexible hose with smooth rigid duct.

Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the dryer or switch off its breaker before pulling the duct or opening any panel — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. On a gas machine shut the gas off at the appliance valve, and never disturb, loosen or test a gas connection yourself. If you smell gas: do not switch anything on or off, leave the building, and call the gas utility or the emergency number from outside. Do not look for the leak yourself. Never run a dryer with a blocked duct, and never use a plastic or foil concertina duct.
When to call a technician
Call once the vent is proved clear and, on an electric machine, the breaker has been cycled fully, because everything that remains is behind the panel and most of it is meter work. Call a gas engineer rather than an appliance technician for anything involving the gas connection itself. Have the vent cleared at the same visit whatever the diagnosis: a machine that tripped its protection once did so for a reason, and replacing the fuse without clearing the duct simply blows the next one.
