The short answer
A dishwasher that has stopped cleaning has almost always lost water pressure, water temperature, or the path the water takes to the dishes — not the pump. Loading, the filter and the spray arms account for the large majority, and none of them costs anything to correct. - Look for white film on glass and a chalky coating inside the machine — That pattern is water chemistry, not a fault.
- Spin each arm by hand and check every jet is clear — An arm that will not turn freely explains a partial clean exactly.

Before you open anything
Safety
Switch the machine off at its breaker or unplug it before removing the filter housing, the spray arms or any panel — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Shut the water off under the sink before disturbing any plumbed joint. The heating element and the water are hot for some time after a cycle, so let the machine stand before reaching into the sump. Never mix descaling products with detergent or with bleach.
When to call a technician
Call when the filter, the arms, the water temperature and the detergent have all been corrected and the result has not improved, because what remains is fill volume or pump pressure and both need instruments. Call a plumber instead if the hot water at the nearest tap never gets properly hot, since no appliance repair can compensate for that. If the sump holds water at the end of every cycle, treat it as a drainage fault first and a cleaning fault second.
