The short answer
Most washer leaks are at a connection rather than through a component, and when the water appears tells you which connection. A leak only on fill is a supply joint; only on drain is the hose or the pump housing; and throughout the cycle is a seal or the tub. On a RCA washer the cause that ranks first is inlet hose washers or fittings.
What you observe
- Water appears only while the machine is filling — A supply-side joint: hose washers, the tap connection, or the valve.
- Water appears only while it pumps out — The drain hose connection, the filter cap or the pump housing.
- NEAR MISS — water only on the floor behind, with nothing wet on the machine — That may be the standpipe overflowing rather than the machine leaking.
Causes, most likely first on a RCA washer
- Inlet hose washers or fittings — Rubber washers perish and fittings loosen with vibration. Ranked first on this washer, because it is common, it is under mains pressure whenever the taps are open, and it is a minute to check.
- Drain hose connection or clamp — The connection at the machine end, or the point where the hose meets the standpipe, weeps only while water is being pushed through it.
- Door boot torn or fouled — On a front loader the boot collects coins and grit in its fold, and those cut it at the lowest point.
- Dispenser overflowing — The wrong detergent, too much of it, or a blocked dispenser sends foam and water out of the drawer and down the front.
Check in this order, and why
- Dry everything, then watch the tap connections during a fill — Water at a fitting during fill is a joint, not a fault.
- Watch the hose and its connection while the machine pumps out — A leak confined to drain is on this path.
- Peel back the boot fold and run a finger round the lowest point — Grit and coins collect there and cut the rubber.
What an owner can safely check
- Shut the taps, dry every joint, then reopen them and watch each connection — Hand-tighten and then a small turn with pliers.
Tools: pliers, towels, torchAbout 20 min
- Watch a drain with a torch on the hose and its connection at the machine — Check the clamp at the machine end and the fit at the standpipe.
Tools: torch, towelsAbout 15 min
- Peel the boot fold open, clean it out and inspect the lowest part for cuts — Coins, grit and hair collect there.
Tools: torch, clothAbout 15 min
- STOP HERE if the next step needs a meter on live terminals or a panel off — That is where an owner check ends and a service call begins, whatever the ranking above says.
Before you open anything
Safety
Shut both taps and switch the machine off at the wall before touching any joint or opening the filter — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Water on the floor beside a powered appliance is a shock and slip hazard: dry it before you work. Never defeat the door lock to watch water move, and never force a locked door on a full machine. Inlet hoses are under mains pressure whenever the taps are open, so never leave a disturbed joint untested.
When to call a technician
Call when every joint, the boot, the dispenser and the filter cap are dry and water is still appearing, because what remains is inside the machine. Call immediately for water appearing under the centre of the machine during wash together with a rumbling noise, which is the tub seal and gets worse quickly. Shut the taps off at the wall between cycles until the source is found: a supply-side leak does not stop when the machine does.

What this page does not cover
This page is written for the RCA washer as a class, not for one family or model line. Where a family- or model-specific page exists for your unit it is linked above, it is the more specific answer, and it is the one to read first. Deliberately not here: part numbers, wiring colours, panel removal order and torque figures, which differ between families under the same nameplate.
