The short answer
The door on a reversible-hinge compact is the weak point of the whole cabinet, and a door that hangs a fraction out of true never seals however good the gasket is. Ranked first on this platform: A door gasket that no longer seals. The checks below follow that ranking, and the first of them need no tools and no panel removed.
What you observe
- Frost or condensation appears near one edge of the door — Air leaking past a gasket condenses at the point where it enters, which marks the failure for you.
- The door looks shut but the interior light is warm to the touch — A light that has been on a long time is the cheapest evidence there is that the door is not actually closing.
- The problem tracks the weather or the time of year rather than being constant — A fault that comes and goes with the season is an environment fault, not a component one.
- NEAR MISS — the freezer is fine and only the fresh-food side is warm — A split like that points at the air path between the two compartments, not at the cooling itself.
Causes, most likely first on this platform
- A door gasket that no longer seals — A gasket that has hardened, torn or taken a permanent set lets a thin stream of room air into the cabinet continuously. It ranks first on this platform because the hinges are bolted rather than welded so that the door can be swapped to the other side, and a door refitted a fraction out of square leaves a gap you cannot see but can feel as a draught at the seal.
- A door held open by its contents — A bottle in the door shelf, a drawer not pushed home or a shelf standing proud will hold a door a few millimetres off its seal. It ranks second here because the door is reversible, which means the hinges are bolted rather than welded and can be reversed, loosened or refitted a fraction out of true — and a compact door that hangs a fraction out of true does not seal.
- The room is outside what the cabinet is rated for — Every cabinet is built for a band of room temperatures. It ranks third rather than higher: real on this platform, and less common than the causes above it.
Check in this order, and why
- Close the door on a slip of paper and pull it out, at several points around the frame — Where it slides out freely, the gasket is not sealing there — and it takes a minute. It leads because it tests the top-ranked cause.
- Open the door, look along the seal line, and push every drawer and shelf fully home — Thirty seconds, and it eliminates the most embarrassing possible cause before you buy anything. Tests the second-ranked cause.
- Measure the room temperature where the cabinet actually stands, not elsewhere in the house — The air beside a cabinet in a sunny alcove is nothing like the air in the hall. Tests the third-ranked cause.
What an owner can safely check
- Run the paper test all the way round and wash the gasket — Warm soapy water on a cloth, then dry it.
Tools: clothAbout 15 min
- Empty the door shelves, reseat every drawer and close the door slowly — Watch where it stops.
About 10 min
- STOP here — the remaining causes are diagnosed with a meter, not by eye — Record which of the checks above changed anything. That record is worth more to the visit than another attempt.
Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off.
When to call a technician
A technician is the answer once the airflow, the door and the condenser are all clean and the cabinet still will not hold temperature, because everything left on the list is measured rather than looked at.

What this page does not cover
This page is written for the Morning Star refrigerator as a class, not for one family or one model line. Where a family- or model-specific page exists for your unit, that page is the more specific answer and the one to read first. Deliberately not here: part numbers, wiring colours and disassembly order, which differ by family.
