The short answer
Most cabinets of this age never had an ice maker fitted, and where one was, it is a mechanical assembly that has been out of production for a very long time. Ranked first on this platform: The cabinet has no automatic ice maker at all. The checks below follow that ranking, and the first of them need no tools and no panel removed.
What you observe
- There is no ice bin, no bail arm and no water connection anywhere on the cabinet — A cabinet with no water line was never going to make ice on its own.
- No ice, and the dispenser gives no water either if the cabinet has one — When both water functions are dead at once, the cause is upstream of both.
- Ice production slowed at the same time as other frozen food got softer — Two symptoms with one date are one cause.
- NEAR MISS — ice forms and then welds itself into one lump — Clumping is a melt-and-refreeze symptom: the compartment is warming between cycles, which is a door or a temperature question.
Causes, most likely first on this platform
- The cabinet has no automatic ice maker at all — A compact cabinet of this class is not built with an ice maker. It ranks first on this platform because establishing whether the cabinet even has an ice maker, and whether it was ever plumbed, decides whether this is a repair or a misunderstanding — and on a cabinet this old it is very often the second.
- The water supply to the appliance is off or restricted — The cabinet is fed by a small valve behind or under it that somebody shut for a plumbing job, a saddle valve that has silted up, or a line kinked when the cabinet was last pulled out. It ranks second here because this is an old machine by any measure, and on an old machine the ranking inverts: what wears out ranks above what breaks, and what has never been serviced ranks above both.
- The freezer is not cold enough to harvest — An ice maker will not eject until the mould thermostat sees its harvest temperature. It ranks third rather than higher: real on this platform, and less common than the causes above it.
Check in this order, and why
- Establish whether there is a water connection behind the cabinet at all — It redirects the whole diagnosis from a water fault to a temperature one. It leads because it tests the top-ranked cause.
- Find the shut-off valve behind or under the cabinet and check it is fully open — It answers half the possible causes in one move. Tests the second-ranked cause.
- Put a thermometer in the freezer and give it several hours — A freezer holds food safely at 0 °F (−18 °C) or below; if it is above that, the ice maker is a symptom rather than the fault. Tests the third-ranked cause.
What an owner can safely check
- Fill a tray with cold water, set it flat on the freezer shelf and leave it overnight — A tray that does not freeze solid overnight is a temperature problem; a tray that does means the cabinet is fine.
About 15 min
- Trace the line from the valve to the cabinet and straighten any kink you find — Look especially at the loop behind the cabinet, which gets crushed every time it is pushed back.
About 20 min
- STOP before anything behind a fixed panel, and note what each check showed — Everything past this line is measured rather than looked at, and measuring it safely needs the power off and a meter.
Before you work on the water side
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off.
When to call a technician
Call if the compartment will not reach a freezing temperature after the control, the frost and the room have all been dealt with, because what is left is the cooling system itself.

What this page does not cover
This page is written for the Montgomery Ward refrigerator as a class, not for one family or one model line. Where a family- or model-specific page exists for your unit, that page is the more specific answer and the one to read first. Deliberately not here: part numbers, wiring colours and disassembly order, which differ by family.
