The short answer

Causes, most likely first on this platform
- A mechanical timer or selector — On a machine with a timer knob, the cycle starts only when the knob is pulled or turned into a live position. It ranks first on this platform because the selector is a mechanical contact stack that has been turned thousands of times, and a knob left between positions or a worn contact gives a machine that is dead on one setting and perfectly alive on another.
- The door or lid not locking — A washer will not begin until it has confirmation that the door is locked. It ranks second here because the controls are mechanical — a bulb thermostat, a timer motor, a lid or door switch — and mechanical controls fail in ways you can hear, see and test without a board reader.
- The supply or the outlet — A washer that shows nothing at all has no power, and the reasons are usually outside the appliance: a tripped protective device, a switched outlet behind the machine, or a plug not fully home after the machine was last moved. It comes third in the order — a genuine cause here, behind the ones above it on frequency alone.
- The water valves closed — A machine with no water waits. It lights up, accepts the cycle and sits there, and because nothing appears to happen at all, nobody thinks of the valves — particularly after a plumbing job or a holiday shut-off. It sits fourth because the causes above it account for more of these cases, not because it is unlikely.
Check in this order, and why
- Turn the selector fully to a different cycle and try again — It costs nothing and it localises the fault to the selector. It leads because it tests the top-ranked cause.
- Push the door firmly shut and listen for the lock to engage — Free, and it is the most common single answer. Tests the second-ranked cause.
- Test the outlet with something else, and reset any protective device — It separates the appliance from the installation in a minute. Tests the third-ranked cause.
What an owner can safely check
- Close the door firmly, listen for the lock, and press start again — If it starts when you press the door in, the catch or the striker is the fault.
