The short answer first
On a Maytag Performa refrigerator, water where it should not be is most often a blocked defrost drain backing water into the cabinet rather than an ice maker overfilling or its fill tube frosting over. The mechanical causes come first, because on a machine this old the drain and the tray have had far longer to block and crack than anything else. All three checks below are owner work, and not one of them needs a part.
What the owner observes
- Ice forming at the bottom of the door — Water that reaches the door and freezes there means it never got to the drain.
- Water at the back, on the floor, near the compressor — That is the tray's territory, and it is reachable without moving much.
- The leak started within a week of a filter change — Timing is evidence: a leak that begins with a service is caused by that service.
- NEAR MISS — the noise of water running but nothing visible — Defrost water reaching the tray sounds exactly like this and is normal.
Causes, most likely first on this brand
- A blocked defrost drain backing water into the cabinet — Water from each defrost runs down a small drain at the back of the freezer to a tray above the compressor. Blocked with debris or plugged with ice, it backs up and appears under the crisper drawers or at the door. It leads because it is the single commonest source of water inside a cabinet, and it is owner work from start to finish. It is a fitted kitchen appliance that has usually outlived the kitchen it was fitted into.
- An overflowing or displaced drip tray — The tray above the compressor is meant to evaporate the defrost water. Cracked, knocked out of position when the cabinet was last moved, or simply overwhelmed in a humid room, it spills onto the floor at the back. It ranks here because it explains floor water with a perfectly dry interior.
- An ice maker overfilling or its fill tube frosting over — If the fill valve passes more water than the mould takes, or the tube ices and diverts the flow, water runs into the freezer and freezes in a sheet on the floor of it. It is last because not every cabinet has an ice maker at all.
What to check first, second, third
- Take out the crisper drawers and look at the floor of the cabinet — Water pooled there, with the outside dry, settles it immediately. First, because it is the likeliest to end the job.
- Look underneath at the tray above the compressor — Cracked, overflowing or knocked askew is visible from the front with the grille off. Second, once that is clean.
- Open the freezer and look at the fill tube above the ice mould — Frost bridging the tube, or ice built under the mould, is the whole answer. Third, and by now the answer is usually in hand.
What an owner can safely check
- Clear the defrost drain from inside the freezer — Warm water in a turkey baster, poured gently down the drain hole. Do not force anything stiff into it.
Tools: baster, warm waterAbout 30 min
- Pull the base grille, remove the tray, empty and reseat it — Check it sits flat in its cradle and is not cracked.
Tools: clothAbout 20 min
- Switch the ice maker off and clear the ice from the mould area — Use warm water and patience rather than anything sharp.

- STOP — isolate the water supply and note where the water collects — Where the water sits is the single most useful thing you can hand a technician.
Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Shut the water supply off at its valve before touching any plumbed joint; a fitting that lets go under pressure empties into a kitchen faster than you can reach the stopcock.
Where the owner fix ends
Call when the leak is on the plumbed side and the joint cannot be reached, when the drain will not clear from inside, or when water keeps returning after the cabinet has been levelled and the tray reseated. Everything else on this list is owner work. On this brand generic parts fit it and the platform is documented, which is the main reason these are still worth repairing.

What this page does not cover
This page is written for the appliance class, not for one Maytag Performa model line. Where a family- or model-specific page exists it is the better answer and it is linked below — go there first if your model is named. Not here: drain routing, tray shapes, filter cartridge references, or valve part numbers.
