On a Maytag Performa refrigerator, a cabinet that runs without getting cold is most often a stalled defrost cycle icing the evaporator over rather than a supply problem outside the refrigeration. The mechanical causes come first, because a machine of this generation has run long enough that a moving part is the honest first suspect. All three checks below are owner work, and not one of them needs a part.
What the owner observes
- It cools well in winter and badly in summer — A seasonal pattern points at heat rejection rather than at the refrigeration itself.
- The freezer is still cold but the fresh-food side is not — A split like this points at air movement rather than at cooling capacity.
- The machine never switches off — Continuous running without reaching temperature is the same fault seen from the compressor's side.
- NEAR MISS — the freezer is warm and the fridge is fine — The other way round points at the freezer's own air path, and the freezer pages cover it.
Causes, most likely first on this brand
- A stalled defrost cycle icing the evaporator over — The evaporator sits behind the freezer's rear panel. When defrost stops clearing it, frost builds into a sheet, air stops passing through, and the fridge side warms while the compressor runs on. It leads because it looks least like a failure: the machine runs, sounds healthy, and cools a little less each week. It is a fitted kitchen appliance that has usually outlived the kitchen it was fitted into.
- An evaporator fan that has stopped turning — The fan behind the freezer panel pushes cold air through to the fresh-food side. When it stops, the freezer often stays cold and the fridge does not: the cold is made but never moved. It ranks here because it explains an uneven cabinet, and uneven is the commonest version of this complaint.
- A supply problem outside the refrigeration — An overloaded extension lead, a switched socket knocked off, a tripped breaker or a plug pushed half out all produce a warm machine. Some leave the interior light working, which is why they get missed. It is last because the compressor is audibly running, which rules most of it out.
The order to check in
- Open the freezer and look at the rear panel — A frost sheet rather than a dusting settles it, and it is visible without a tool. First, because it is the likeliest to end the job.
- Listen at the freezer with the door shut and the light switch held in — A fan you cannot hear while the machine runs explains a warm fridge with a cold freezer. Second, once that is clean.
- Follow the lead to the socket and check the breaker — Do this first if the machine has been moved or the interior light looks dim. Third, and by now the answer is usually in hand.
What an owner can safely check
- Empty the cabinet and leave both doors open for a full defrost — Towels and patience. If it cools properly afterwards, the defrost system is the cause and it will come back.
About 45 min
- Listen for the fan, then stop if the panel has to come off — The listening is owner work; the panel is not, on a cabinet that must be defrosted first.
About 10 min
- Plug the cabinet straight into a wall socket and drop the extension lead — Check the breaker at the same time, and that the socket is not on a switch someone knocked.
About 10 min
- STOP HERE and write down what each check showed — A technician arriving with the free causes eliminated fixes rather than repeats your work.
Safety first, and it is not a formality
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Oil around the compressor or tubing means the system is open — stop there, because every hour it runs makes the repair worse.
Where the owner fix ends
The line is the freezer's rear panel: everything in front of it is owner work and settles most of these faults, and behind it is a service call. On the food: a refrigerator holds food safely at 40 °F (4 °C) or below. On this brand generic parts fit it and the platform is documented, which is the main reason these are still worth repairing.

This page is written for the appliance class, not for one Maytag Performa model line. Where a family- or model-specific page exists it is the better answer and it is linked below — go there first if your model is named. Not here: vent layouts, defrost timings, the control variant, part numbers.
