- The machine never switches off — Continuous running without reaching temperature is the same fault seen from the compressor's side.
- The cabinet is warm and the compressor is clearly running — The machine is working and losing, which is a different fault from one that has stopped.
- A sheet of frost on the rear wall of the freezer — Light frost is normal; a sheet you cannot see the panel through is not.
- NEAR MISS — the cabinet is silent and nothing runs at all — That is a supply or start fault on a different page. A completely dead cabinet is not this.

- An evaporator fan that has stopped turning — The fan behind the freezer panel pushes cold air through to the fresh-food side. When it stops, the freezer often stays cold and the fridge does not: the cold is made but never moved. It leads because the split symptom — freezer fine, fridge warm — points almost nowhere else, and that is what most owners describe. They are found in older kitchens and utility rooms where the services around them are as old as the machine.
- A stalled defrost cycle icing the evaporator over — The evaporator sits behind the freezer's rear panel. When defrost stops clearing it, frost builds into a sheet, air stops passing through, and the fridge side warms while the compressor runs on. It sits here because the evidence is specific — a sheet rather than a dusting — and easy to check once the quicker causes are out.
- A supply problem outside the refrigeration — An overloaded extension lead, a switched socket knocked off, a tripped breaker or a plug pushed half out all produce a warm machine. Some leave the interior light working, which is why they get missed. It is last because the compressor is audibly running, which rules most of it out.
The order to check in
- Listen at the freezer with the door shut and the light switch held in — A fan you cannot hear while the machine runs explains a warm fridge with a cold freezer. First, because it is the likeliest to end the job.
- Open the freezer and look at the rear panel — A frost sheet rather than a dusting settles it, and it is visible without a tool. Second, once that is clean.
- Follow the lead to the socket and check the breaker — Do this first if the machine has been moved or the interior light looks dim. Third, and by now the answer is usually in hand.

- Listen for the fan, then stop if the panel has to come off — The listening is owner work; the panel is not, on a cabinet that must be defrosted first.

Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Oil around the compressor or tubing means the system is open — stop there, because every hour it runs makes the repair worse.
