What you observe
- It runs only while the start button is held — A start switch or a door switch on its way out — the classic signature of both.
- No lights, no display, nothing at all — A supply problem: the socket, the breaker or the connection rather than the machine.
- NEAR MISS — it turns but never heats — Then it is starting perfectly well and the heating page is the one to read.
What goes wrong here, in order
- The door switch — No dryer will run with its door signal missing. A switch worn by tens of thousands of openings, or a door that no longer closes square, leaves the machine lit, willing and completely inert. It heads the list here: the door on this machine is opened more often than anything else on it, and its switch is the commonest single failure. Magic Chef is a long-standing budget brand: parts exist and are catalogued, but the unit's replacement cost is low enough that the repair-or-replace line arrives early.
- The belt, the motor or the start switch — A hum with no drum movement is a broken belt or a motor that cannot start. A machine that runs only while the button is held has a start switch on its way out. Both sit behind a panel and neither is an owner repair. Next in order: it is what remains once the supply, the door and the panel are clean, and the hum places it precisely.
- A thermal fuse that has opened — On many machines a thermal fuse opens for good when the dryer overheats, and a machine with an open fuse is completely dead or will not start even though everything else is sound. The overheating is nearly always a blocked vent. After those two: it is a real cause but it follows the airflow story rather than standing on its own.
- The supply at the socket or the panel — A tripped breaker, a plug not fully home in a cramped space, or a connection disturbed when the machine was moved leaves a dryer dead. On a large electric machine it is possible to lose one side of the supply and get a machine that turns without heating. Further down: it is quick to eliminate and worth doing before anything is opened.
Work through it in this order
- Press the door firmly closed while pressing start — A machine that starts only with the door pressed has a switch or an alignment problem, and it will get worse.
- Listen for a hum, and turn the drum by hand with the power off — A drum that spins far too freely by hand with a hum on start is a broken belt, which is a specific thing to tell a technician.
- Ask whether it had been drying slowly before it stopped — Weeks of slow drying followed by a machine that will not start at all is the signature of a fuse that opened because of a restriction.
What an owner can safely check
- Clean the door face and the switch plunger, and check the door closes square — Lint packs around the plunger and stops it being pressed fully. Check the door is not dropping on its hinge.

- Clear the lint filter and the vent duct before anything else is considered — Replacing a fuse without clearing the restriction that opened it simply opens the next one.

Before anything comes apart
Safety
Unplug the dryer or switch off its breaker before removing any panel — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. On a gas dryer: if you smell gas, do not switch anything on or off, leave the building, and call the gas utility or 911 from outside; do not look for the leak yourself. Never run a dryer with its vent disconnected into the room.
When to call a technician
Call when the socket is live, the door closes firmly, no lock is set and the machine still will not run — particularly if it hums without turning. Call at once for any smell of burning or gas.
