The answer first
On a Lowe's refrigerator an empty ice bin is usually a water-supply or a temperature problem rather than a failed ice maker. The first two checks below take minutes and need nothing but your eyes and a glass. Replacing the ice maker is the last resort on this list, not the first move.
What you observe
- The bin is empty and stays empty — No cubes at all after a full day, with the unit otherwise running normally.
- Cubes are small, hollow or misshapen — That is a water-volume symptom, not an ice-maker failure — the mould is not filling.
- NEAR MISS — there is water under the unit as well as no ice — A leak with an ice fault usually means the supply line or the fill valve, and the water-leak page covers that path in detail.
Causes in likelihood order
- A clogged or overdue water filter — A filter at the end of its life drops the flow to a trickle. The ice maker fills partly, freezes what it has, and produces small hollow cubes or nothing at all — while the dispenser slows at the same time, which is the tell. It heads the list here: nobody changes it on schedule, and a starved fill is the commonest reason an ice maker slows to nothing. Lowe's is the retailer rather than the builder: the plate inside the door names the manufacturer that actually made the unit, and that name — not the shop it came from — is what parts and procedures follow.
- The freezer is not cold enough to complete a cycle — An ice maker will not harvest until the mould reaches its release temperature. A freezer sitting a few degrees warm — because the door is opened constantly, the cabinet is overfull, or the seal is tired — makes ice slowly or not at all while the food inside still looks frozen. Next in order: ice is the earliest casualty of a freezer that has drifted warm, so it is worth checking before the ice maker itself.
- The fill valve or the ice maker module itself — When the supply, the filter and the freezer are all sound, what remains is the valve that admits water to the mould or the module that runs the harvest. Both are documented parts on most refrigerators, and both are replaced rather than repaired. Third on this list: it is a real failure but it is the one that costs money, which is why every free check comes first.
- The water supply to the appliance — A shut-off valve left part-closed, a kinked line behind the unit, or a connection that was never opened after an installation will starve the ice maker without any other symptom. The unit keeps trying to fill and keeps getting nothing. Fourth in order: it is easy to eliminate and worth doing before anything is taken apart.
The order to check in
- Fill a glass at the dispenser and watch the flow — A thin or stuttering stream is a filter or pressure problem; a strong steady one clears the whole supply path in a single test.
- Check whether the freezer is at 0 °F (−18 °C) or below — A freezer holds food safely at 0 °F (−18 °C) or below, and an ice maker needs roughly that to complete a harvest. Warmer than that and the ice is a symptom, not the fault.
- Look for ice frozen in the mould or a frozen fill tube — A fill tube blocked by an ice plug is a specific and repeatable fault, and it tells you the valve is admitting water at the wrong time.
The owner checks, step by step
- Replace the water filter and run several glasses through to purge the air — Expect sputtering for the first few glasses after a change. Ice made in the first batch afterwards is usually discarded.
Tools: replacement filterAbout 15 min
- Clear the freezer vents, check the door seal and let the cabinet recover — Give it a full day at a lower setting before deciding the ice maker is at fault.
About 20 min
- STOP before pulling the ice maker assembly out — Removing it means disconnecting a harness and often working around a fill tube that has frozen. That is where the owner check ends.
Safety, before the checks
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Turn the water off at the wall valve before disturbing any connection, and never thaw a frozen fill tube with a flame or a heat gun; warm water and patience do it without melting the plastic around it.
The line between a fix and a call
The owner's part ends at the fill tube. If the supply is open, the filter is new, the freezer is cold and the arm is down, the remaining causes all sit behind a panel with a live harness and a water connection side by side, which is a technician's job.
