On a Llorell refrigerator this almost always comes down to airflow or to the heat the unit is being asked to get rid of, not to a dead compressor. The first two checks below need no tools and no panel removed, and between them they settle most of these calls. The sealed system is the last thing to suspect, not the first.
What you observe
- A sheet of frost on the back wall of the freezer compartment — Not the usual light dusting but a solid layer, which is what blocks the air path.
- The unit never cycles off — It runs continuously and still never reaches its set temperature, which is the same fault seen from the other side.
- NEAR MISS — only the ice maker has stopped while the food stays cold — Cold cabinet with no ice is a water-supply or ice-maker fault, not a cooling fault, and the page for ice production is the one to read.
Causes in likelihood order
- Airflow stopped by a frosted evaporator — The evaporator is meant to shed its frost on a timed cycle. When that cycle stalls, ice builds across the coil until air can no longer pass through it, and the cabinet warms while the compressor runs on without a pause. This is the one to start with: the defrost cycle fails before anything else on this brand, and it fails gradually rather than all at once. Llorell is an import brand sold without a service network, so a fault that would be a parts call on a major brand becomes a replace-or-live-with-it decision here.
- A sensor or control reading the wrong temperature — The control only knows what its sensor tells it. A sensor reading colder than the cabinet really is will stop the unit cooling long before it should, and everything mechanical will look and sound perfectly normal while it happens. Second on this brand: it imitates the entries above it exactly, so it is worth considering as soon as they come up clean.
- The room it stands in and the air behind it — A refrigerator does not destroy heat, it moves it into the room. Stand one in a hot garage, box it into a surround, or push it back against a wall so the coil cannot breathe, and the cabinet warms up while the unit runs flat out. Third in order: it matters here but the checks above it explain more of these calls.
What to check first, second, third
- Look at the back wall of the freezer compartment for a solid frost layer — A sheet of ice rather than a dusting means the defrost side is the fault and no amount of cleaning elsewhere will help.
- Compare the display with a thermometer left in a glass of water in the cabinet — A display that insists the cabinet is at temperature while a thermometer says otherwise has named the fault for you.
- Put a hand behind and above the unit and feel for warm air moving away — Still, hot air trapped behind the cabinet means the unit is recycling its own heat, and nothing else you check will matter until that is fixed.
The owner checks, step by step
- Empty the unit, switch it off and let it defrost fully with the door open — Cold restored after a full manual defrost, then lost again over the following days, confirms the defrost system as the cause and makes the service call a specific one.
Tools: towelsAbout 45 min
- Unplug the unit for a few minutes, then restore power and set the temperature again — A control that has latched into a wrong state will sometimes clear. If the same wrong reading comes back, the sensor or the board is the fault.
About 10 min
- STOP here if the next step needs a panel off or a meter on live terminals — Naming the likely cause is the useful outcome of an owner check; getting behind the panel is a different job with a different set of risks.
Safety, before the checks
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Do not try to chip ice off an evaporator with a knife or a screwdriver: the tubing behind it is soft aluminium, and a puncture turns a cheap fault into a sealed-system repair. Leave the door switch alone.
When to call a technician
Call once the checks above come up clean, or as soon as the fault points at the sealed system: refrigerant work is licensed work and the tools for it are not owner tools. Call immediately if you see oil around the compressor or smell burning — oil outside the tubing means the system is open, and every hour it runs after that costs more to put right.

The limits of this page
Generalized information. This page covers Llorell refrigerators as a class rather than one family or model line, and where a page exists for a specific family it is the better answer for your unit — go there first if your model is named. Deliberately not here: wiring colours, component locations, part numbers and any figure that changes between families.
