The short answer
On a LG Signature refrigerator an empty ice bin is usually a water-supply or a temperature problem rather than a failed ice maker. The first two checks below take minutes and need nothing but your eyes and a glass. Replacing the ice maker is the last resort on this list, not the first move.
What you are seeing
- The bin is empty and stays empty — No cubes at all after a full day, with the unit otherwise running normally.
- Cubes are small, hollow or misshapen — That is a water-volume symptom, not an ice-maker failure — the mould is not filling.
- NEAR MISS — there is water under the unit as well as no ice — A leak with an ice fault usually means the supply line or the fill valve, and the water-leak page covers that path in detail.
Causes in likelihood order
- The water supply to the appliance — A shut-off valve left part-closed, a kinked line behind the unit, or a connection that was never opened after an installation will starve the ice maker without any other symptom. The unit keeps trying to fill and keeps getting nothing. Top of the list on this one: this unit is connected to its water by a temporary or retrofitted line, and that line is the part of the system that fails first. LG Signature is the built-in end of the LG range: the same platform lineage, but installed into cabinetry, which changes what can go wrong and what it takes to get at it.
- A clogged or overdue water filter — A filter at the end of its life drops the flow to a trickle. The ice maker fills partly, freezes what it has, and produces small hollow cubes or nothing at all — while the dispenser slows at the same time, which is the tell. It follows immediately: it is quick to test at the dispenser and it explains the small-cube version of this fault exactly.
- The freezer is not cold enough to complete a cycle — An ice maker will not harvest until the mould reaches its release temperature. A freezer sitting a few degrees warm — because the door is opened constantly, the cabinet is overfull, or the seal is tired — makes ice slowly or not at all while the food inside still looks frozen. Third on this list: it is a real cause but it usually announces itself in the food as well as in the ice.
- The ice maker is switched off or the arm is held up — Every ice maker has an off position — a wire arm, a lever, or a setting on the control. Loaded groceries push that arm up, a child presses the wrong button, and the unit obediently stops making ice with nothing whatsoever wrong. Fourth in order: it is worth a glance before anything else is opened up.
What to check first, second, third
- Trace the water line from the wall valve to the back of the unit — Look for a valve that is not fully open and for a kink where the line is pinched against the wall — both are common after a unit has been pulled out and pushed back.
- Fill a glass at the dispenser and watch the flow — A thin or stuttering stream is a filter or pressure problem; a strong steady one clears the whole supply path in a single test.
- Check whether the freezer is at 0 °F (−18 °C) or below — A freezer holds food safely at 0 °F (−18 °C) or below, and an ice maker needs roughly that to complete a harvest. Warmer than that and the ice is a symptom, not the fault.
Steps you can take safely
- Open the shut-off valve fully and straighten the supply line — Pull the unit forward far enough to see the whole run of the line rather than the last few inches of it.

- Replace the water filter and run several glasses through to purge the air — Expect sputtering for the first few glasses after a change. Ice made in the first batch afterwards is usually discarded.
Tools: replacement filterAbout 15 min
- STOP before pulling the ice maker assembly out — Removing it means disconnecting a harness and often working around a fill tube that has frozen. That is where the owner check ends.
Safety, before the checks
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Turn the water off at the wall valve before disturbing any connection, and never thaw a frozen fill tube with a flame or a heat gun; warm water and patience do it without melting the plastic around it.
When to call a technician
Call when the water path is clear, the freezer holds 0 °F (−18 °C) and the bin is still empty: at that point the fault is in the valve or the module, and both involve disconnecting water and power at the same time. Call sooner if you find water anywhere it should not be.

Generalized information. This page covers ice production on LG Signature refrigerators as a class, not on one family or model line; where a family-specific page exists it is the more precise answer and is linked above.
