What the fault looks like
- It hums but the drum does not turn — A broken belt or a motor that cannot start, which is a different fault entirely.
- It runs only while the start button is held — A start switch or a door switch on its way out — the classic signature of both.
- No lights, no display, nothing at all — A supply problem: the socket, the breaker or the connection rather than the machine.

What goes wrong here, in order
- The supply at the socket or the panel — A tripped breaker, a plug not fully home in a cramped space, or a connection disturbed when the machine was moved leaves a dryer dead. On a large electric machine it is possible to lose one side of the supply and get a machine that turns without heating. - A lock, a delay or a control that has latched — Child lock, delay start and demonstration mode leave a machine lit and idle. So does a control that has hung after an interrupted cycle. - A thermal fuse that has opened — On many machines a thermal fuse opens for good when the dryer overheats, and a machine with an open fuse is completely dead or will not start even though everything else is sound. - Test the socket, check the breaker and make sure the plug is fully home — A breaker that looks on can still have tripped: switch it fully off and on again rather than trusting its position.
- Press the door firmly closed while pressing start — A machine that starts only with the door pressed has a switch or an alignment problem, and it will get worse.
- Look for a lock or delay indicator, then switch off at the breaker for a minute — A machine that starts normally after a reset had latched rather than failed.

Switch the dryer off at its breaker or unplug it before any panel comes off — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. If you smell gas at a gas dryer: do not switch anything on or off, leave the building, and call the gas utility or 911 from outside. Do not look for the leak yourself.

Call when the socket is live, the door closes firmly, no lock is set and the machine still will not run — particularly if it hums without turning. Call at once for any smell of burning or gas.
