The short answer

Symptoms, including the misleading ones
- The door lock clicks repeatedly and the cycle never begins — The machine is trying to lock the door and failing, and it will not run until it succeeds.

What goes wrong here, in order
- An overload the machine has protected itself from — Motors and pumps have thermal protection. After a heavy load, a jammed pump, or a run of cycles back to back with no pause, a machine will simply refuse to begin until it has cooled — and it usually does so without any message. Check in this order, and why
- Ask whether it has run hard, or jammed, in the last hour — A machine that refuses immediately after a heavy run and starts normally later has told you it was a thermal cutout, not a failure.
- Close the door firmly and listen for the lock — A single solid click followed by the cycle starting is a healthy lock. Repeated clicking, or silence, means the machine cannot confirm the door and will not go any further.
- Look for standing water in the drum before anything else — Water left from the last cycle means the machine is refusing because it cannot drain, and the drainage page is the one to follow.
What an owner can safely check
- Leave it switched off for an hour, then try the shortest programme — Empty the drum first, and check nothing is jammed in the pump filter before restarting.

Unplug the machine or switch off its breaker before removing any panel — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Shut both taps before disconnecting a hose, and expect water in the machine even when the drum looks empty: a drain filter opened without a tray under it empties onto the floor.
The line between a fix and a call
The line is the back panel. Everything at the wall, the door and the panel is an owner check; a lock replacement, a control board or a motor is not. A machine that trips a breaker should be left unplugged until it is looked at.
