- Damp only on heavy or fast-spin loads — Water being forced past a marginal seal at the point of highest pressure.

What goes wrong here, in order
- The drain hose not secured at the standpipe — This heads the list because both ends are visible behind the machine and because the inlet version is the one that can flood a room while nobody is home. It is at the top because the evidence for it is visible from outside, and because the alternative explanations all cost money. A smaller brand rarely publishes a service manual to the public, so the order below leans on what is visible from outside rather than what a schematic would tell you.
- A siphon in the dispenser clogged with powder — It belongs here because it is free to fix, because the water appears at the front exactly like a door leak, and because the drawer comes out by hand on almost every machine. It ranks below the first only because the first is more common, not because it is harder to find.
- A boot seal with a coin or a wire trapped in it — The door seal on a front loader holds back a drum of moving water and takes a beating from zips, coins and grit. Small tears at the lower edge let water past on the wash and the spin, where the pressure is highest. Third, because the evidence for it only means something once the two above are ruled out.
- Pump housing, filter seal or tub seal leaking — A genuine tub seal failure is rare and is usually the end of a machine's economic life, which is why it sits at the very bottom of this list rather than the top. It ranks last on the evidence rather than on its importance: when it is the answer, it is unmistakable.
The order to check in
- Dry every fitting at the back, run a fill, and feel each joint — A fingertip finds a weep that the eye will not, and the tap fittings are where to start. First, because it separates the top two causes in under a minute.
- Check the softener siphon cap is fitted and clear — A missing or blocked cap makes the compartment overflow every cycle. Second, and still no tools beyond a torch.
- Pull the seal fold open all the way round and look inside — Grit, coins and hair grips collect at the bottom and hold the seal off the glass. Third, and only if the two above found nothing.
