The short answer first
On a Lagan dishwasher, poor cleaning is usually blocked spray arm jets rather than a worn-out machine. Water has to reach every surface at temperature; anything that interrupts that — a blocked arm, a packed rack, a dirty filter — shows up as grit or film on the load.
Symptoms, including the misleading ones
- Only heavily soiled items come out dirty — That is often a cycle choice: a short eco cycle is not intended for baked-on food.
- Dishes on the top rack clean, bottom rack poor, or the other way round — One arm is not doing its job. Which rack fails tells you which arm to look at.
- A smell from the machine and dull results together — The filter and the sump are overdue a clean, and that explains both complaints at once.
- NEAR MISS — the machine will not complete a cycle — If it stops partway rather than washing badly, the cycle fault is the page to read, not this one.
Causes on a Lagan dishwasher, likeliest first
- Blocked spray arm jets — The arms spray through a row of small holes, and those holes block with limescale, seeds and label fragments. As they close, the arm spins more slowly and the pattern collapses, so coverage falls away long before anything stops completely. It leads because this machine reaches it before it reaches anything else, and because the check needs no tools. On a badge this size the parts channel is thin, so the ranking is written around what can be checked and corrected without a part on order.
- Overfilled racks and nested items — Everything in a dishwasher is cleaned by water thrown from spinning arms. A tray laid flat, a pot over the lower arm or bowls nested into each other creates a shadow, and nothing in that shadow gets touched by water at all. It sits second: less common than the one above, but still ahead of anything that needs a meter.
- Incoming water not hot enough, or a short cycle chosen — Detergent needs heat to work. A machine fed from a cold supply spends the first part of the cycle heating water, and on a short cycle it may never reach the temperature the detergent was designed for, leaving a film and undissolved powder. Third in the order: less common than what precedes it, and more work to confirm.
- Filter and sump overdue a clean — The filter keeps debris out of the wash water. Once it is loaded, the water sprayed over the dishes carries the last load's food with it, which is why the result is gritty rather than simply less clean. Bottom of the list — uncommon enough that starting here is how an afternoon disappears.
The order to check in
- Spin each arm on its spindle with the racks out — It should turn freely with barely any resistance; anything stiff or wobbling needs attention. First: the answer here changes everything you do next.
- Load the machine as usual, then spin both spray arms by hand — If either arm stops against something, you have found the fault without opening anything. Next: it confirms or clears the cause ranked second, and needs nothing but light.
- Run the kitchen hot tap until it is hot, then start the cycle — If results improve, the supply temperature at the start of the fill was the problem. Leave this one until the cheap checks are done; it is the slowest of the three.
The steps, with tools and times
- Remove the spray arms, clear every jet, and refit them so they spin freely — A cocktail stick clears most jets; do not enlarge them with anything metal.
Tools: cocktail stick, hot waterAbout 25 min
- Run a load at half capacity to test whether results improve — A clean result on a light load is the proof that loading was the problem.
About 20 min
- Select a longer or hotter cycle for soiled loads and compare the result — Change one thing at a time, or you will not know which change worked.
About 10 min
- STOP once the checks above are clean and the fault remains — A clean sweep of the owner-side causes is itself a useful result: it tells the technician where not to look.
Safety first, and it is not boilerplate
Safety
Switch off at the socket or isolator first; a capacitor and mains terminals sit behind the door panel. Use a glove and a torch rather than bare fingers when clearing a sump, and never mix cleaning chemicals in the tub while looking for a smell.
When to call a technician
Call when the arms are clear, the filter is clean, the load is right and the water is hot, and the results are still poor. At that point the suspects are the wash pump, the heater and the inlet valve, and all three need the machine tested rather than cleaned.

Generalized information
This page is deliberately generalized across the Lagan dishwashers it covers. It does not carry model-specific wiring, torque values or component resistance figures — those belong on the page for your family, and that page takes precedence where it exists.
