What this usually is
Most Koolmore refrigerator noise is a fan blade striking ice or debris, and on this cabinet that is where to start listening. The cabinet's normal sounds — a hum while running, ticking as it starts and stops, water trickling after a defrost — are not faults. Anything rhythmic, grinding or new is worth chasing.
Symptoms, including the misleading ones
- Clicking every few minutes with no cooling change — A start relay or a control clicking through its cycle. Regular and quiet is normal; repeated clicking with warming is not.
- A gurgle or trickle a few minutes after the unit stops — That is refrigerant settling and defrost water running to the drain pan. Both are normal and neither needs fixing.
- A rhythmic ticking or chopping that comes and goes — Something is contacting a moving blade intermittently, usually ice on a fan or a stray packet against it.
- NEAR MISS — the noise is water hammer in the wall when the valve shuts — A bang in the pipework when the icemaker fills is a plumbing issue rather than an appliance one, and the fix is outside the cabinet.
The causes in order of likelihood
- A fan blade striking ice or debris — Fan noise changes with the door switch, which makes it the easiest cause on this list to confirm. Open the freezer and the evaporator fan stops; hold the switch in and it starts again, noise and all. It ranks first here: it is both the most common and the cheapest to eliminate, which is the only order worth working in. Built for a back-of-house duty cycle, this class fails at the consumables first — filters, seals, hoses and screens — because those are what the duty consumes.
- Start relay clicking at the back — The useful test with compressor noise is not loudness but change: the same hum that has been there for years is not a fault, and a hum that altered last month might be. It sits second: less common than the one above, but still ahead of anything that needs a meter.
- Feet and rollers out of adjustment — This cause is at once the most common source of new noise and the cheapest to fix, because nothing has failed. A cabinet that has been pulled out for cleaning and pushed back slightly differently will often start buzzing for exactly this reason. Third, because the evidence for it only means something once the two above are ruled out.
- Water noises after a defrost cycle — The pan that catches it is a loose plastic tray by necessity, and a tray that has been disturbed during cleaning rattles against the frame every time the compressor starts. At the foot of the list, on likelihood alone.
The order to check in
- Look through the base grille at the condenser fan with a torch — Dust packed around the blade, or something drawn in from the floor, is visible without removing anything. Do this first: it settles the likeliest cause before any tool comes out.
- Note whether clicking is followed by the unit running or by silence — Click then run is a normal start; click, silence, click again is a start device that is not succeeding. Second, and still no tools beyond a torch.
- Press a hand firmly on the top and on each side while it runs — A noise that changes or stops under hand pressure is contact and vibration, not a component. Only worth doing once the two above are ruled out.

- Clear packets and bags away from the freezer rear vents — A bag drawn against the vent is the commonest version of this fault and takes a minute to fix.
