KitchenAid Washer Won't Spin — Motor & Belt Repair Guide
This guide covers specifically the drive-train failures that prevent drum rotation on KitchenAid washers. If your machine washes and rinses but the drum simply does not spin at all (no rotation, no attempt), the power transfer from motor to drum has been interrupted. This is distinct from "stops spinning" (see cycle-not-completing) or "slow spin" (see not-spinning).
Zero Spin vs. Weak Spin
Zero spin (this guide): Motor may run but drum is stationary. Drive belt snapped, coupling sheared, or motor not receiving spin command.
Weak/slow spin: Drum rotates but does not reach full speed. See the not-spinning guide for sensor and imbalance issues.

Drive Train by Model Type
KFWF Front-Loaders (Belt-Drive)
Motor → drive belt → drum pulley → drum. If belt breaks = zero spin. If belt slips = weak spin.
KFWF Front-Loaders (Direct-Drive)
Motor mounted directly to rear of tub, rotor/stator design. If motor fails = zero spin. No belt or coupling.
KTWF Top-Loaders
Motor → motor coupling → transmission → agitator/drum. If coupling breaks = zero spin (but motor still runs). If transmission fails = zero spin in spin mode but may still agitate.
Most Common Causes
1. Drive Belt Broken (KFWF Belt-Drive — 35%)
The multi-rib belt (same as used in automotive applications) wraps from the motor pulley to the larger drum pulley. Wear, age, or contamination (oil drip from bearing seal failure) causes it to snap. You hear the motor run but nothing turns.
Confirmation: Remove the rear panel. If belt is in pieces on the base or missing from the pulleys, replacement is needed.
DIY Difficulty: Easy-Moderate Parts Cost: $12–$30 Professional Repair Cost: $125–$225
Repair Steps:
- Unplug, remove rear panel (4 Torx T20 screws).
- Remove broken belt fragments from machine interior.
- Place new belt around the drum pulley (larger, at rear of tub).
- Stretch belt over motor pulley while manually rotating the drum — the belt walks into the pulley grooves.
- Verify proper rib alignment in both pulleys.
- Spin drum by hand to confirm smooth rotation with appropriate belt tension.
2. Motor Coupling Sheared (KTWF — 30%)
The three-piece coupling (two drive forks + rubber center) absorbs shock. KitchenAid's commercial-grade motor torque accelerates rubber wear. When the center rubber piece disintegrates, the motor spins freely with no connection to the transmission.
Confirmation: Remove the cabinet. Motor shaft spins but transmission input does not. Rubber fragments may be visible on the base.
DIY Difficulty: Moderate Parts Cost: $15–$45 Professional Repair Cost: $175–$325
3. Motor Failure (Both Types — 15%)
Burned windings, failed capacitor (on capacitor-start motors), or rotor/stator failure (direct-drive). Error code F7E6 indicates motor overcurrent. Motor may buzz but not rotate.
DIY Difficulty: Moderate-Hard Parts Cost: $150–$300 Professional Repair Cost: $275–$500
4. Control Board Not Commanding Spin (10%)
The spin relay on the control board fails open — no power reaches the motor during the spin phase. All other cycle phases work normally.
Parts Cost: $180–$380 Professional Repair Cost: $300–$525
5. Transmission Failure (KTWF — 5%)
Internal gear or clutch failure in the transmission. Rare but expensive. The motor runs, coupling is intact, but the transmission cannot convert rotation to spin output.
Parts Cost: $200–$400 Professional Repair Cost: $400–$700
6. Rotor Bolt Loose (Direct-Drive — 5%)
On direct-drive KFWF models, a single large bolt secures the rotor to the drum shaft. If it loosens, the motor spins inside the stator but does not turn the drum.
Parts Cost: $0 (re-torque) or $5 (new bolt with threadlocker) Professional Repair Cost: $125–$200
Safety First — Know the Risks
High-voltage components and pressurized water lines create flood and shock risk. A single loose fitting can cause thousands in water damage. Our techs are licensed and insured — let them handle the risk.

Diagnostic Quick-Test
- Start a spin cycle. Listen for motor sound (humming, running).
- If motor runs but drum stationary: belt (KFWF) or coupling (KTWF) is the issue.
- If no motor sound: check for error codes (F7E1, F7E6). Motor, capacitor, or board.
- If motor briefly attempts then stops: motor protection tripping due to locked rotor or overcurrent.
- With machine off, try spinning drum by hand. If it does not spin freely, there may be a mechanical jam independent of the motor.

FAQ
Q: My KitchenAid washer motor hums but the drum doesn't turn. Belt or motor?
If the motor hums (vibrates) but does not rotate at all, the motor itself is seized or has a failed capacitor. If the motor clearly runs (spinning freely) but the drum is stationary, the belt is broken or coupling is sheared.
Q: How do I know if my KitchenAid washer is belt-drive or direct-drive?
Remove the rear panel. Belt-drive: you see a motor at the bottom with a belt running to a large pulley on the rear of the drum. Direct-drive: the motor (circular, flat) is mounted directly to the rear of the tub with no belt visible.
Q: Is it worth replacing the motor on my KitchenAid washer?
If the machine is under 8 years old, yes. Motor replacement ($275–$500 professional) is less than a new KitchenAid washer ($1,200–$2,000). For machines over 10 years, weigh motor cost against the machine's remaining lifespan.
