Kenmore Washer Temperature Not Right — Troubleshooting Guide
Incorrect water temperature in a Kenmore washer is almost always a water supply or inlet valve issue — not a washer malfunction. The critical fact: most Kenmore washers (all 110-series, most 417-series) have NO internal water heater. They rely entirely on your household water heater for hot water.
Temperature Control by Platform
- 110-series (Whirlpool): No internal heater. Temperature = mix of hot and cold from house supply. If hot water is not hot, the washer cannot make it hot.
- 796-series (LG) select models: Internal heater for Sanitize/Allergen cycles only. Normal Hot/Warm/Cold cycles use supply water only. A thermistor monitors temperature on models with heaters.
- 417-series (Electrolux) select models: Internal heater on some models for Sanitize cycle.

Common Scenarios
Water Too Cold When Set to Hot
Most likely: Hot-side inlet valve solenoid failed, hot-side screen clogged, hot supply valve closed, or water heater not producing hot water. Check by running hot water at the nearest sink.
Water Too Hot When Set to Cold
Most likely: Hot and cold fill hoses are reversed (connected to wrong ports), or the cold-side solenoid is stuck closed and hot-side is leaking past its seat (dual solenoid valve with one faulty side).
Water Lukewarm on All Settings
Most likely: One inlet screen is partially blocked (restricting flow on one temperature), or the water heater is set too low (below 120°F).
Sanitize Cycle Not Reaching Temperature (796/417 Only)
Most likely: Internal heater element burned out, or thermistor (temperature sensor) failed. The thermistor is an NTC type — approximately 50,000 ohms at room temperature. If it reads significantly different, the control board receives incorrect temperature data.
Diagnostic Steps
- Test hot water at nearest sink — does the house water heater work?
- Check fill hose connections — hot to hot, cold to cold.
- Inspect inlet screens — remove hoses and check for mineral buildup.
- Test inlet valve solenoids with multimeter — 500-1500 ohms normal.
- For 796/417 with Sanitize issues: test thermistor resistance and heater element continuity.

FAQ
Q: My Kenmore 110 washer water is never hot enough — can I add a heater?
No — the 110-series platform has no provision for an internal heater. Raise your water heater temperature to 120°F, and run the hot water at the laundry sink for 30 seconds before starting the washer to purge cold water from the pipe.
Q: My Kenmore washer uses cold water regardless of setting — is the control board broken?
Unlikely. Check the hot-side inlet valve solenoid first — if it is dead (open winding), only cold water enters regardless of what the control board commands. This is a $25-60 valve replacement, not a $200+ board replacement.
