The short answer
On a Kegco draught cabinet there are two noise sources people confuse: the refrigeration and the gas side. A hiss or intermittent sigh is usually the regulator or a fitting, not the compressor. Separate the two before opening anything, because a hiss is also how a gas leak announces itself. Because these hold their contents for weeks rather than days, a small error shows up as a slow drift rather than an obvious fault.
What you observe
- A rattle from the base at start-up — Usually the cabinet, its feet or a loose panel rather than the compressor.
- A whirr from the tower or the vent — A fan bearing or a blade touching something it should not.

Causes, most likely first on a Kegco refrigerator
- Gas side: regulator, fittings or bottle — Id: gasparts — The gas side is a pressure system: a regulator that has begun to pass, or a fitting that is not fully seated, hisses or sighs. That sound is checked first because it can mean a leak. First on a draught cabinet because it is the one noise here that is also a safety finding.
- Cabinet not level, or touching something — Id: level — Second: half of what people hear is the floor rather than the appliance: a unit that rocks, or one pressed against a wall or a cabinet run, hands its vibration straight to the structure, which makes a great deal more of it.
- Condenser fan, or debris in its path — Id: condfan — Third: the fan that cools the coil is the part most likely to find something: a leaf, a bag, a pet's hair or a bearing that has run dry. All of them announce themselves from the back of the unit.
- Refrigerant and defrost noises, which are normal — Id: normalflow — Last, and the reason the order matters: some of these sounds are the machine working properly: liquid moving through narrow tubing gurgles, plastic ticks as it changes temperature, and defrost water sizzles on a warm surface.
Check in this order, and why
- Listen at the regulator and brush soapy water on the fittings — Bubbles name a leak without any tool at all. First because it is the top-ranked cause above and costs nothing.
- Rock the cabinet and check its feet and clearances — Any movement, or any contact with a wall or unit, is the finding. Second because its cause ranks second above.
- Look at the fan behind or under the cabinet with the power off — Debris in the blade path shows itself immediately. Third because its cause ranks third above.

- Separate the gas noise from the refrigeration noise — A hiss near the bottle or regulator is the gas side and is checked first.

Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the cabinet before removing any panel. Treat the gas side separately: a carbon dioxide cylinder is a pressure vessel, it must stand secured, and a leak in a closed room is a suffocation risk rather than a noise. If you find a leaking fitting, close the bottle valve first.
When to call a technician
Call for refrigeration noise that survives levelling and cleaning. Deal with a gas leak immediately and separately: close the cylinder valve, ventilate the space, and have the fittings replaced rather than tightened repeatedly. Draught parts are widely stocked and standard; the cabinet's refrigeration parts are ordered against the model on the rating plate.
