The short answer
A built-in Jenn-Air microwave that runs without heating is usually being asked not to: a low power level, a defrost setting, or a showroom demonstration mode left on. Those three are free to check and they come first. Everything after them is high-voltage work, and none of it is an owner repair. Because these usually stand in a tight spot, the space around the unit is worth checking before anything inside it.
What you observe
- The turntable turns, the light is on, the food is cold — The control side works and the heating side does not.
- It heats weakly and slowly — A low power level, or a high-voltage part beginning to fail.
- NEAR MISS — nothing runs at all — That belongs on the page for a machine that will not start.
Causes, most likely first on a Jenn-Air microwave
- Power level or defrost setting — Id: powerlevel — A microwave at a low power level cycles its heating on and off. Set low, it runs the full time and warms almost nothing, which reads exactly like a failure. First because it costs nothing and because a touch panel makes it easy to set and easy to miss.
- Demonstration or showroom mode — Id: demomode — Second: display mode lets a machine light up and run without heating. It survives a power cut and it is set by a key sequence that can be entered accidentally.
- Interlock or monitor switch — Id: doorswitch — Third: the switches that confirm the door is shut also gate the heating side. One out of adjustment leaves a machine that runs and never heats.
- Magnetron at the end of its life — Id: magnetron — Last, and the reason the order matters: the part that actually makes the heat wears out. The symptom is exactly this: everything works, nothing gets hot. Replacement is service work and the economics need checking first.
Check in this order, and why
- Set full power explicitly and run a cup of water — A minute of full power tells you more than any setting on the panel. First because it is the top-ranked cause above and costs nothing.
- Check the manual for a demonstration mode — The key sequence to clear it is model-specific. Second because its cause ranks second above.
- Note whether it always runs but never heats — Consistent behaviour points at a gate rather than a wearing part. Third because its cause ranks third above.
What an owner can safely check
- Set full power and heat a cup of water for a minute — Use a microwave-safe cup; if the water warms, the machine is working and the setting was the fault.
Tools: mugAbout 10 min
- Restore the clearance the manual asks for and retest — Pull it out, leave the gap, and give it a day before judging.
About 25 min
- Check the panel for a low power level or a defrost setting — Re-enter the cook time explicitly at full power rather than reusing a preset.
About 10 min
- Check the manual for demonstration mode and clear it — It is a key sequence, it survives a power cut, and it does exactly this.
About 15 min
- STOP HERE — the heating side is not an owner repair — The capacitor holds a lethal charge after unplugging. Nothing behind the cabinet is a home check.
Before you open anything
Safety
A microwave stores dangerous energy in its high-voltage capacitor long after it is unplugged, and that capacitor can be lethal to touch. Nothing inside the cabinet is an owner repair: unplug it, clean what you can reach from the front, and leave the cover on. Never run the machine with a damaged door, a bent frame or a latch that does not engage, and never defeat an interlock to keep using it.
When to call a technician
Call once full power, the panel settings and demonstration mode have all been ruled out and the food is still cold — everything left is behind the cabinet and carries a lethal charge. Ask for the diagnosis and the part cost before authorising the work: a magnetron plus labour is often close to the price of a replacement machine, and that is a decision worth making with the number in front of you. Parts are dealer-ordered against the model number on the rating plate, and the service documentation for the exact family is available to the technician who comes out.

What this page does not cover
This page covers Jenn-Air microwaves as a class, not one family or model line. Where a family- or model-specific page exists for your unit, that page is the more specific answer. Not here: magnetron part numbers, capacitor ratings and service procedures. It is a built-in premium line, installed flush into cabinetry and sold through dealers who hold the model-specific service manual.
