The short answer
Dishes that come out dirty or gritty: on a Janska dishwasher that is usually a load blocking the spray, not a failed wash pump. If that is clean, water arriving too cool is next. Most causes below are owner checks needing no tools and no panel off; the last is a service call.
What you are looking at
- The top rack is clean and the bottom is not — Or the reverse -- one rack consistently missed.
- Grease smears rather than lifting — Plates feel slick rather than dirty.
- Dishes come out with a gritty film — Fine debris redeposited across everything.
- NEAR MISS -- there is standing water at the end — Fix the drainage first; a machine sitting in dirty water cannot wash.
Causes, most likely first on this kind of unit
- The load is blocking the water — A tray, a large pan or an overhanging plate stops the spray arm turning or shadows everything behind it. The cycle runs perfectly and half the load never gets washed. Ranked first on a Janska compact machine, often fed from a faucet: a small tub is easy to overload, and a blocked arm is the commonest cause of a bad wash.
- The water arriving is not hot enough — A dishwasher relies on hot water at the inlet, and a long pipe run or a low heater setting starves it. Grease smears rather than lifting and detergent never dissolves fully. This rank, because detergent that has not dissolved leaves exactly this film.
- The filter is fouled — The filter catches what comes off the dishes. Packed with paper labels, seeds and grease, it recirculates dirty water and leaves a gritty film on everything. Placed here: dirty recirculated water cannot clean anything, whatever the cycle does.
- The wash pump or diverter — A worn pump or a diverter that no longer alternates racks gives weak pressure that no cleaning will fix. Confirming it needs the machine opened and a meter. Last, and that is the point of the order: it is the one cause here that is not an owner repair, so it is last.
Check in this order, and why
- Spin each spray arm by hand — Close the door slowly and watch for contact; anything that stops an arm is your cause.
- Run the sink tap hot before starting — Draw hot water at the nearest tap until it is hot, then start the cycle.
- Only after filter, load and water are proven — A clean filter, free arms, hot water and fresh detergent that still washes badly is a service call.
What an owner can safely check
- Pull and rinse the filter, and clear the sump — Twist the filter out, rinse it under the tap, and lift out debris underneath.

- Spin both spray arms by hand and reload — Nothing may touch an arm; nothing tall may shadow the rack behind it.
About 10 min
- Take the arms off and clear each jet — Hold them to the light and clear the blocked holes with a toothpick.

- STOP HERE -- the next step needs the kick panel off — Pumps, diverters and heater circuits are technician work.
Before you open anything
Safety
Switch the dishwasher off at its breaker or the switch under the sink before any panel comes off, and close the supply valve before touching a fitting. Water in the sump can be scalding at the end of a cycle.
When to call a technician
Call once the filter, the spray arms, the drain path and the detergent have all been ruled out.

What this page does not cover
This page covers the Janska dishwasher as a class, not one family or model line. Where a family- or model-specific page exists for your unit it is the more specific answer -- go there first if your model is named. Deliberately not here: spray-arm part numbers, pump assemblies, sensor locations and the panel-removal order, all of which differ by family.
