The short answer
On an Insignia dryer, a machine that will not begin a cycle is usually a supply that is not arriving rather than a failed drive motor. If that is clean, a door switch not reporting closed is next. Work the order below -- cheap causes first, the one that is not an owner fix last.
What you are looking at
- The panel lights but nothing happens — It accepts the cycle and the drum never moves.
- It hums and the drum stays still — A motor sound with no rotation.
- The drum spins freely by hand — No resistance at all when turned.

Causes, most likely first on this kind of unit
- The supply is not arriving — A tripped breaker, one dead leg, or a cord unseated behind the machine leaves a dark panel or a panel that lights and will not run. Both matter and they look different. First here, because on an Insignia unit -- mainstream mechanics, cost taken out of the electronics a dryer circuit is its own breaker, and that breaker is what has usually moved.
- The door switch is not reporting closed — No dryer runs with the door reported open. A worn striker, a bent plunger or a tired switch leaves the panel lit and the drum still. Ranked here because a machine that thinks the door is open will never run the drum.
- The thermal fuse has opened — On many platforms the same one-shot fuse that protects the heat also feeds the motor circuit. Once it opens after an overheat, the machine is completely dead with no other symptom. Ranked here because an opened fuse gives a dead machine with a lit or dark panel and nothing else wrong.
- The drive motor or its start circuit — A motor that hums without turning, or one silent with everything above proven, needs a meter on live terminals. That is where owner checks end. It comes last because it is the one cause here that is not an owner repair, so it is last.
Check in this order, and why
- Reset both poles and prove the outlet — A large appliance circuit is typically thirty amps or more at two hundred forty volts; switch it fully off, then on.
- Open and close the door and listen for the click — Press the plunger by hand with the door open; a clean click is what the control needs.
- Only after switch, supply and belt are proven — A hum with no drum movement, or silence with everything above clean, is a service call.

Unplug the dryer or switch off its breaker before any panel comes off. If it is a gas dryer and you smell gas: do not switch anything on or off, leave the building, and call the gas utility or emergency services from outside -- do not look for the leak yourself.

Vent, filter and load are yours; elements, gas valves, thermal cutoffs and bearings are not.
