The short answer
An ice maker that has stopped producing: on an IKEA refrigerator that is usually a freezer too warm to release ice, not a failed ice-maker module. If that is clean, a frozen fill tube is next. Work the order below -- cheap causes first, the one that is not an owner fix last.
What you are looking at
- Cubes are small, hollow or misshapen — The maker is cycling but the fill is short.
- There is an ice plug at the back of the compartment — Water froze before it reached the mold.
- Cubes sit frozen in the mold and never drop — The fill worked and the harvest did not.
- NEAR MISS -- the dispenser works but no ice arrives — Water at the door proves the supply; the fault is past the valve.
Causes, most likely first on this kind of unit
- The freezer is not cold enough to harvest — An ice maker will not release a harvest until the mold reaches its release temperature. Ranked first on an IKEA appliance on its mainstream OEM platform: on this kind of cabinet the freezer is the marginal part, so temperature comes before any part swap.
- The fill tube or the fill cup is frozen — A slow fill dribbles and refreezes at the tube mouth until the path closes. Placed here: an ice plug at the tube mouth stops the water before the maker ever sees it.
- The maker is switched off, or the bin is not seated — A bail arm resting on ice, a bin pushed in crooked, or an off switch left from a previous fill all stop production with nothing broken anywhere. Placed here: a maker that thinks the bin is full does exactly this.
- The maker module, mold heater or harvest motor — A module that will not cycle, a dead mold heater or a seized harvest motor leaves full cubes stuck in the mold. Last, and that is the point of the order: it is the one cause here that is not an owner repair, so it is checked last.
Check in this order, and why
- Measure the freezer, not the fresh side — A freezer holds food safely at zero degrees Fahrenheit or below; above that, fix the cold first.
- Look for an ice plug at the fill tube — Thaw it with warm water and watch the next fill; a repeat plug means the supply is too slow.
- Only after water and temperature are proven — Cubes frozen solid in the mold with a cold freezer and good fill is the signature -- and that is a service call.
What an owner can safely check
- Lift the bail arm, clear and re-seat the bin — Then switch the maker on and note the time; a harvest takes hours, not minutes.
About 5 min
- Measure the freezer with a thermometer — A freezer at or below zero degrees Fahrenheit can harvest; a warmer one cannot.

- Full-open the shutoff and check the line behind the cabinet — Look for a crushed or kinked section, and straighten what you find.

- STOP HERE -- the next step needs a meter on the module — Mold heaters, harvest motors and module timing are technician work.
Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the unit or switch off its breaker before removing any panel; a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off.
When to call a technician
The line is simple: anything you can reach without a panel is yours, anything behind a panel or on the sealed system is a technician's.

What this page does not cover
This page covers the IKEA refrigerator as a class, not one family or model line. Where a family- or model-specific page exists for your unit it is the more specific answer -- go there first if your model is named. Deliberately not here: module part numbers, harness colours, fill-volume adjustment and the exact harvest timing, all of which differ by family.
