The short answer
On an IKEA microwave, a door that no longer closes or seals as it should is usually debris jamming the catch rather than a damaged door assembly. Second, and worth checking in the same hour, is debris on the sealing faces. The top of that list is owner work; only the last cause needs a technician.
What you are looking at
- The door does not sit flush when closed — A wedge-shaped gap, wider at one end.
- There is baked-on splatter round the cavity mouth — A ridge of residue on the sealing faces.
- The latch feels gritty or sticks — It needs force, or it does not spring back.
- NEAR MISS -- rust or chipped paint at the cavity mouth — Stop using the oven; that is a replacement decision, not a repair.
Causes, most likely first on this kind of unit
- Debris in the latch or catch — A crumb, a label or a fragment of packaging in the catch stops the latch travelling fully. First here, because on an IKEA appliance on its mainstream OEM platform the catch is a small mechanism in a food environment, and it collects exactly what stops it working.
- Food and grease on the sealing faces — The door face and the cavity flange around it form the seal. Placed here: debris on the sealing face holds the door off, and everything else follows from that.
- The door is sagging on its hinge — A door that has been leaned on, hung with a towel, or opened by its corner drops on its hinge. Placed here: a dropped door meets the cavity unevenly, so it seals at the top and not the bottom.
- The door assembly or the choke seal — The seal around a microwave door is built into the door structure itself, not a rubber gasket.
Check in this order, and why
- Look into the catch with a torch — Unplug, then clear the catch and the latch hooks with a dry brush.
- Clean the door face and the cavity flange — Unplug first, then wipe both surfaces until they are smooth and dry.
- Only after cleaning and the cavity check — A door that is bent, cracked or will not latch after cleaning means stop using the oven and get it judged.
