The short answer
On an Igloo refrigerator, a cabinet that runs without getting cold is usually heat with nowhere to go rather than a dead compressor. The next thing to rule out is a door that is not sealing. Most causes below are owner checks needing no tools and no panel off; the last is a service call.
What you are looking at
- Food spoils earlier than it should — Milk and leftovers turn early with the dial untouched.
- A thermometer inside disagrees with the panel — A refrigerator holds food safely at forty degrees Fahrenheit or below.
- NEAR MISS -- the freezer is cold and only the fresh side is warm — That points at the damper or the air path between compartments, a narrower fault than this page.
Causes, most likely first on this kind of unit
- The condenser cannot reject its heat — Heat taken out of the cabinet has to leave through the condenser. Top of the list on a compact single-evaporator cabinet -- on an Igloo compact or chest cabinet, it is the cause an owner most often creates by accident, and it needs no tools to rule out.
- The door is not sealing — A gasket that has taken a set, a dropped hinge, or a shelf holding the door off its face lets warm humid air in continuously. This rank, because warm air leaking in explains a running compressor and a warm box at once.
- The set point or the thermostat is wrong — A dial knocked toward warm, a control left in showroom or holiday mode, or a drifted sensor holds the cabinet at the wrong temperature with nothing else wrong in the machine. Placed here: a control reading the wrong temperature asks for exactly what you are getting.
- The sealed system or the compressor — A refrigerant leak, a blocked capillary or a compressor that will not pump leaves a cabinet that hums and stays warm. It comes last because it is the least common cause and the most expensive, which is why it is checked last.
Check in this order, and why
- Feel the condenser and the air around it — A coil that is hot with no breathing room answers the question before you touch anything else.
- Paper-test the gasket all the way round — Shut the door on a sheet of paper and pull; anywhere it slides out freely is not sealing.
- Only after the checks above are clean — Oil at the compressor, or a coil that never warms at all, moves this to the front -- and it is a service call.
What an owner can safely check
- Clear the condenser and give the unit room — Vacuum the coil and grille, then pull the cabinet out far enough for hot air to escape.
Tools: vacuum, soft brushAbout 20 min
- Paper-test the door seal all the way round — Check top, both sides and bottom, and clear any shelf holding the door off its face.
About 10 min
- Stand a thermometer in a glass of water inside — Read it hours later rather than trusting the panel; it separates a cooling fault from a control fault.

- STOP HERE -- the next step needs a meter on live terminals — Windings, start devices and sealed-system pressures are technician work.
Before you open anything
Safety
Power off at the plug or the breaker before any panel comes off.
When to call a technician
The line is simple: anything you can reach without a panel is yours, anything behind a panel or on the sealed system is a technician's.

What this page does not cover
This page covers the Igloo refrigerator as a class, not one family or model line. Where a family- or model-specific page exists for your unit it is the more specific answer -- go there first if your model is named. Deliberately not here: wiring colours, defrost-board part numbers, compressor start devices and the panel-removal sequence, all of which differ by family.
