The short answer
Start here -- on an Iceco refrigerator, a new noise from a cabinet that is otherwise cooling points first at a variable-speed compressor changing note, not at a failing compressor. If that is clean, vibration through an unlevel cabinet is next. The top of that list is owner work; only the last cause needs a technician.
What you are looking at
- A buzz or drone that comes and goes — It starts and stops with the compressor.
- A rattle or slap from underneath — It comes from the floor level, behind the grille.
- A knock that does not change with the door — It is heavy, metallic and regular.
- NEAR MISS -- gurgling and popping a few minutes at a time — That is refrigerant moving and plastic contracting, which is normal.
Causes, most likely first on this kind of unit
- The variable-speed compressor changed pitch — A DC compressor ramps its speed with load, so its note rises and falls. First here, because on an Iceco box running from a vehicle or auxiliary battery a DC unit is meant to change pitch with load, and owners hear that change as a new fault.
- The cabinet is rocking on uneven feet — A cabinet that is not level transmits normal compressor vibration into the floor and into itself. Placed here: vibration through the frame amplifies a sound the machine always made.
- Tubing or the drain pan is touching the cabinet — Refrigerant lines and the pan are meant to sit clear of the shell. This rank, because a buzz that follows the compressor exactly is contact, not a bearing.
- The compressor mounts or the compressor itself — Hardened rubber grommets let the compressor knock against its frame; internal wear gives a heavy metallic knock that does not change with the door. Bottom of the list, deliberately: it is last because every cheaper sound above has to be eliminated first.
Check in this order, and why
- Note whether the pitch tracks the load — A note that rises after a door opening and settles later is speed control doing its job.
- Push each top corner and watch for rock — Any movement means the feet are carrying uneven load; set them and recheck.
- Only after the checks above are clean — A heavy knock that ignores the door and tracks the compressor is a service call.
What an owner can safely check
- Open the door and listen for the change — A noise that stops with the door open is inside the cabinet, on the fan side.
About 5 min
- Push each top corner and set the feet level — Stop the rock first; it is free and it removes the loudest false alarm.
Tools: levelAbout 15 min
- Unplug, pull the cabinet out and clear the condenser fan — Clear dust from the blade and guard, and remove anything leaning on the grille.
Tools: vacuum, flashlightAbout 25 min
- STOP HERE -- do not unbolt a compressor mount — Mounts and compressors are technician work, and the system is under pressure.
Before you open anything
Safety
Power off at the plug or the breaker before any panel comes off.
When to call a technician
Call once the condenser, the seal, the set point and a full defrost are all ruled out.

What this page does not cover
This page covers the Iceco refrigerator as a class, not one family or model line. Where a family- or model-specific page exists for your unit it is the more specific answer -- go there first if your model is named. Deliberately not here: fan part numbers, grommet kits, panel-removal order and the acoustic signature of each family, all of which differ by model line.
