How to Replace the Clock Battery in a Frigidaire Gas Range (ICR18650 Li-Ion)
Some Frigidaire gas ranges include a rechargeable lithium-ion battery (ICR18650 type, 3.7V) that maintains clock memory and enables electronic ignition during brief power interruptions. When this battery degrades, the clock resets to 12:00 every time power flickers, the oven timer loses its settings during outages, and on some models the electronic ignition may not spark during the momentary power gap when the oven gas valve opens. The battery charges from line power during normal operation and only depletes when the range is unplugged or during extended outages.
This repair is specific to certain Frigidaire Gallery and Professional gas range models manufactured between 2010-2020 that include a battery backup feature. Not all Frigidaire ranges have this battery. If your range never had battery backup (clock always resets during any power loss), this guide does not apply to your model.
Before You Start
- Tools needed: Phillips #2 screwdriver, Torx T15 (Gallery back panels), soldering iron and solder (if battery is soldered to leads), heat-shrink tubing or electrical tape, wire strippers
- Parts needed: ICR18650 Li-Ion rechargeable battery with tabs (~$8-$15), or equivalent 3.7V 18650 cell with pre-welded solder tabs
- Time required: 30-45 minutes
- Difficulty: Intermediate
- Safety warning: Turn off the gas supply and the circuit breaker before accessing internal electronics. The battery itself is low-voltage (3.7V) and not dangerous, but gas ranges have gas lines and 120V wiring in proximity. Li-Ion batteries can vent or ignite if punctured, short-circuited, or soldered incorrectly (keep soldering time brief to avoid overheating the cell).

Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Confirm Your Model Has a Battery
Check your Frigidaire range model number against the owner's manual or Frigidaire's support site. If your clock maintains time during brief outages but has stopped doing so, a battery is present and has degraded. If your clock has NEVER maintained time during power loss, your model likely does not have battery backup. Common models with this feature include certain FGGF and FPGF series Gallery and Professional gas ranges.
Step 2: Access the Control Board Area
Turn off the gas valve at the shut-off behind/beside the range. Turn off the circuit breaker. Pull the range forward from the wall for rear access. On most Frigidaire Gallery gas ranges, the control electronics are behind the rear upper panel (the backguard area) or behind the front control panel. For backguard models: remove the rear panel screws (typically 6-8 Phillips or Torx T15 screws). For front-control slide-in models: remove the front panel (screws at each end after removing end caps).
Step 3: Locate the Battery
The ICR18650 battery is a cylindrical cell approximately 65mm long and 18mm in diameter (roughly AA battery size but slightly larger). It is typically mounted in a battery holder clip on the back of the control board, or connected via two wires (red positive, black negative) with a small connector plug. Some models have the battery soldered directly to the board via spot-welded tabs on the cell. The battery is usually wrapped in blue or green PVC sleeve with the ICR18650 marking visible.
Step 4: Remove the Old Battery
If the battery is in a holder: Simply slide or unclip the battery from the holder. Note the polarity (positive terminal toward the spring contact or marked + end).
If connected via wires/plug: Disconnect the plug from the control board header. Note polarity of the connector (photograph before disconnecting).
If soldered directly: You will need to desolder the tab connections or carefully cut the tabs close to the old cell and solder the new cell's tabs to the remaining stub wires. Keep soldering time on the battery tabs under 3 seconds per joint to avoid overheating the lithium cell.
Step 5: Install the New Battery
Install the replacement ICR18650 cell in the same orientation as the original:
- Holder mount: Insert with correct polarity
- Connector type: Connect the new battery's lead wires to the same connector (pre-made replacement battery packs with matching connectors are available for many Frigidaire models)
- Solder-tab type: Solder the positive tab to the positive wire/pad and negative to negative. Use brief, precise soldering contact (2-3 seconds maximum). Insulate each connection with heat-shrink tubing
Step 6: Verify and Reassemble
Before fully reassembling, restore power momentarily. The clock should initialize and begin keeping time. Note the current time, then briefly switch the breaker off and on (simulating a power flicker). If the battery is functioning, the clock should maintain its time through the interruption. If the clock resets, verify battery polarity and connections. Once confirmed working, reinstall all panels with original hardware. Reconnect the gas supply.
Battery Specifications
| Parameter | Specification |
|---|---|
| Chemistry | Lithium-ion (ICR/Li-Cobalt) |
| Voltage | 3.7V nominal (4.2V fully charged) |
| Capacity | 1500-3000 mAh (varies by model, any 18650 capacity works) |
| Form factor | 18650 (18mm diameter, 65mm length) |
| Connection | Solder tabs preferred; bare cell works for holder-mount only |

Important: Use ONLY rechargeable ICR18650 or equivalent Li-Ion cells. Do NOT substitute non-rechargeable lithium batteries (CR123A, etc.) — the charging circuit will attempt to charge them, creating explosion/fire risk. Do NOT use unprotected high-drain cells meant for vaping/flashlights unless they fit the holder correctly.

Understanding the Battery's Role
The battery serves two purposes in equipped Frigidaire gas ranges:
- Clock/memory retention: Maintains time and programmed settings during power interruption (saves user from resetting after every flicker)
- Ignition bridge (some models): When the oven gas valve opens, there is a brief millisecond power interruption on some circuit designs. The battery bridges this gap to ensure the electronic spark igniter fires continuously. Without the battery, the igniter may not spark during this micro-gap, leading to delayed ignition (gas accumulates before lighting, causing a "whumph" sound)
The second purpose is safety-relevant: if your gas range produces a noticeable gas smell before ignition when starting the oven (delayed spark), replacing the degraded battery may resolve this concerning behavior.
Troubleshooting After Battery Replacement
- Clock resets despite new battery: Verify polarity. Test the new battery voltage with multimeter (should read 3.3-3.7V for a new cell, rising to 4.0-4.2V after charging from line power for several hours)
- Battery gets hot during operation: Incorrect battery type installed (non-rechargeable being force-charged) OR reversed polarity OR dead short in wiring. Disconnect immediately
- Clock works but oven igniter still delays: The ignition circuit may have a separate issue (faulty igniter electrode, weak spark module) unrelated to the battery

When to Call a Professional
Contact a professional if:
- You smell gas after pulling the range from the wall (gas line connection may have loosened)
- The battery is soldered directly to the board and you are not comfortable with soldering near electronic components
- The control board shows visible damage (burn marks, corroded traces) beyond simple battery failure
- You cannot identify which model-specific battery or connector your range uses
- The oven igniter delay is severe (more than 3 seconds of gas flow before ignition) — this may indicate a more serious ignition system problem

FAQ
Q: Does my Frigidaire range have a backup battery? A: Not all models. If your clock maintains time during brief power flickers but has recently stopped doing so, a battery is present and has degraded. If the clock has never survived power loss, your model likely has no battery backup.
Q: Can I use any 18650 battery as a replacement? A: Use any quality ICR18650 rechargeable Li-Ion cell. Avoid ultra-high-drain cells designed for vaping (unnecessary and may not fit). Must be rechargeable (ICR/INR chemistry). Never substitute non-rechargeable lithium cells.
Q: How long does the Frigidaire range backup battery last? A: Typically 3-5 years before capacity degrades noticeably. The battery charges from line power during normal operation, so its lifespan depends more on charge cycle count than calendar time.
Q: Is it dangerous if the backup battery fails? A: Not immediately dangerous, but on models where the battery bridges the ignition gap, a failed battery can cause delayed oven ignition (gas accumulates before sparking). This produces a concerning "whumph" sound and should be addressed.
