How to Repair a Maytag Washing Machine
Most Maytag washer failures come down to seven parts — the drain pump, shock absorbers, suspension rods, door lock, shift actuator, control board, or motor coupling. Read the F#E# code, confirm with a meter, and swap the one part; each repair runs 30-90 minutes.
Maytag rides on the Whirlpool platform, so the same W10/WP part numbers, the same diagnostic mode, and the same F#E# codes apply — which is why parts and repair information are easy to find. Below are the seven replacements that actually need a new part rather than a clean or an adjustment.
Tools and setup#
- Tools: Phillips #2 screwdriver, T20 Torx driver, 5/16-inch nut driver, pliers, multimeter, 7/16-inch socket (top-load), putty knife
- Time: 30-90 minutes per repair
- Difficulty: Intermediate
- Safety warning: Disconnect power and water supply before beginning any repair.

Repair 1 — Drain pump (F9E1)#
Standing water, a hum during drain with no water moving, or an F9E1 code point at the drain pump. On a front-load MHW, pull the lower front panel, unplug the pump, release the two hose clamps, back out the 2-3 screws, and fit the new pump (Whirlpool WPW10730972 or equivalent) with the hoses oriented as before — and move the filter across. On a top-load MVW, drop the cabinet, find the pump at the base, and swap it the same way.
Repair 2 — Shock absorbers (front-load MHW)#
Banging on spin and a tub that swings when pushed mean worn shocks, which run diagonally from the tub bottom to the base-frame corners. Pry the retaining clip and drive out the lower pin, free the upper pin at the tub, and seat the new shocks fully at their ball-socket joints. Always replace both, even if only one looks bad — the heavy Maytag tub bangs harder than a lighter Whirlpool when they wear.
Safety First — Know the Risks
High-voltage components and pressurized water lines create flood and shock risk. A single loose fitting can cause thousands in water damage. Our techs are licensed and insured — let them handle the risk.

Repair 3 — Suspension rods (top-load MVW)#
Heavy vibration and a tub that hits the cabinet on a top-loader usually means the four suspension rods that hang the tub have worn springs. With the cabinet off, support the tub, pry each rod off its top frame hook and its bottom tub mount, and install all four as a set. The heavier MVW counterweights make a single failed rod throw the whole tub off balance.
Repair 4 — Door lock (F5E2)#
An F5E2, a door that will not lock at the start, or one that will not release at the end points at the lock, which holds both a latch and a solenoid that confirms engagement to the board. Take off the top panel (3 rear Phillips screws, slide back), release the door-boot outer clamp, unplug the harness, remove the 2 T20 Torx screws, fit the new lock, and reseat the boot and clamp.
The Real Cost of DIY
Average DIY attempt: $150-400 in tools you may use once, plus the risk of further damage. Our diagnostic visit costs $0 — we find the problem and give you an honest quote.

Repair 5 — Shift actuator (F7E1)#
A washer that fills but will not agitate or spin, a clicking from the base at mode changes, or an F7E1 is the shift actuator — the top mechanical failure on Maytag top-loaders. With the cabinet off, find it on the bottom of the gearcase, unplug its single harness, remove the 2 screws, and set the new one (Whirlpool W10913953 or equivalent) so its arm engages the transmission cam. Run a diagnostic cycle to confirm.
Repair 6 — Control board#
Multiple codes, erratic behavior, a flickering display, or a dead machine can mean the main control unit or the user-interface board. Get to the board (behind the lower rear panel or in the console, depending on model), photograph every connection, unplug the harnesses, pull the board, move any thermal pads or brackets across, and reconnect everything in place. Run diagnostics to confirm.
Don't Void Your Warranty
Opening your appliance yourself may void the manufacturer warranty. Our repair comes with a 90-day guarantee, and we document everything for warranty compliance.

Repair 7 — Motor coupling (direct-drive models)#
If the motor runs but the drum stays still with no grinding — unlike a broken belt — suspect the motor coupling on direct-drive top-loaders. Drop the cabinet, unplug the motor, release its clips, and pull it straight off the transmission shaft. The coupling is a three-piece set (two drive forks and a rubber insert designed to fail first and spare the pricier parts); clear the old pieces off both shafts, align the new forks with the insert tabs, and reseat the motor fully.
Diagnostic tips#
- Enter the Maytag diagnostic mode (the 3-button sequence on the tech sheet) before ordering, so you confirm the failed part.
- The tech sheet is inside the machine: behind the console on front-loaders, or in the flipped-up console cavity on top-loaders.
- Meter each electrical part before replacing it, and record the exact code, since some codes share symptoms.
- After any repair, run a full cycle and watch it for the first 24 hours.
Is It Worth Your Time?
Washer problems have dozens of possible causes from bearings to control boards. Average DIY troubleshooting: 3-5 hours plus parts ordering delays. Our technician diagnoses the issue in about 30 minutes — same-day appointments available.

When to call a professional#
Some jobs are past a parts swap. Call a technician for a tub-bearing replacement (a 3-4 hour job that splits the tub and presses a bearing), a failed transmission (a sealed, non-repairable unit), a wiring harness with multiple breaks, or any warranty-eligible repair you want to keep covered — Maytag warranties the motor and basket for 10 years while wear parts get standard coverage.
Bigger than a parts swap? Schedule a same-day Maytag washer repair.
