The short answer
A new noise from a Home dryer is usually a support, a belt or something loose in the blower rather than a failing motor. The first thing to check: drive belt worn or frayed. What the noise sounds like narrows it to one part before any panel comes off.
What you observe
- A rhythmic thump in time with the drum — Drum supports, which wear gradually.
- A squeal that rises as the drum speeds up — The belt, usually before it breaks.
- NEAR MISS — the drum does not turn at all — A drum that will not turn is a different fault. Read the will-not-start page for this brand.
Causes, most likely first on a Home dryer
- Drive belt worn or frayed — A belt that is glazing squeals, and one that is fraying slaps once per drum revolution. The drum usually still turns, so the complaint is noise rather than failure, at least at first. A badge-engineered machine uses standard consumables, and standard consumables are what fail first. This is the cheapest cause on the list and the most common one.
- Coins, zips or buttons in the drum or the blower — Anything that escapes a pocket ends up either tumbling against the drum or drawn into the blower wheel, where it makes a hard rattle or a scraping buzz that changes with drum speed. Nothing on this machine is clever enough to compensate for how it is loaded, so the loading cause ranks high rather than being an afterthought.
- Machine unlevel or touching a wall or a neighbouring machine — A dryer that rocks or leans on the washer beside it turns ordinary vibration into a drone. It sounds like a mechanical fault and it moves the moment the machine does. These machines are self-installed more often than not, so the hose run, the levelling and the standpipe are live suspects rather than givens.
Check in this order, and why
- Listen for a squeal that rises as the drum comes up to speed — A squeal is a belt until proven otherwise. It is first because it is the highest-ranked cause here.
- Empty the drum and turn it by hand, listening for something loose — The free check, and it settles most sudden noises. Second: the next most likely, and free to rule out.
- Push the top corners and see whether the machine rocks or touches anything — Free to check and a real answer surprisingly often. Third, and only once the two above are clean.
What an owner can safely check
- Empty the drum, check the lint filter housing and turn the drum by hand — A coin in the blower rattles hardest at the start and end of a cycle, when the wheel changes speed.

Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the machine or switch off its breaker before removing any panel or reaching into the lint filter housing. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Never run a dryer with a panel removed or the vent disconnected into the room, and keep the lint path clean, because lint is fuel. If you smell gas, do not switch anything on or off, leave the building, and call the gas utility or the emergency number from outside.
When to call a technician
Call when the noise is a rhythmic thump or a continuous grind, when the drum has become hard to turn by hand, or when a squeal arrives with weak drum rotation. Call immediately if you smell burning. A rattle that turns out to be a coin, or a drone that disappears when the machine is levelled, needs no visit at all, which is why the free checks come first.
