The short answer
When ice stops on a Heartland refrigerator, the water supply and the freezer temperature account for most of it, and the ice maker itself for far less than owners expect. On this build the styling is retro and the cabinetry is heavy, so hinges, seals and the weight of the doors carry faults that a light modern build never sees, which is why the supply side comes first below. The first two checks need no tools and take minutes.
What you observe
- The mould is empty and dry — Water is not arriving. That is a supply, valve or line problem, not an ice maker problem.
- Ice is produced but slowly, and the cubes are hollow or small — Low water pressure, a restricted filter or a freezer that is not cold enough.
- The dispenser pushes out nothing but the bin holds fused ice — A melt-refreeze cycle, usually from a door left ajar or a freezer running warm.
- NEAR MISS: water pools under the unit and there is no ice — That is a supply leak rather than an ice fault, and the water-leak page is the one you want.
Causes, most likely first on this build
- Water supply off, kinked, or the shut-off not fully open — Ranked first on this build: these are installed quickly and the saddle valve or stop tap behind the unit is regularly left part-open, which is the single most common cause here.
- Clogged water filter or a frozen fill tube — Second: a filter at the end of its life, or ice plugging the fill tube, throttles the water without stopping it.
- Freezer running too warm for the harvest cycle — Third: the ice maker waits for the mould to reach its release temperature, so a warm freezer simply stops the cycle.
- Water inlet valve failed or its solenoid dead — Last: last of the common causes, and it needs a meter to confirm rather than an owner check.
Check in this order, and why
- Check the shut-off valve behind or below the cabinet is fully open — This is the first check because it is the most common cause and it costs nothing.
- Check the filter age and the fill tube for ice — A restricted fill and a failed ice maker look identical from the front.
- Put a glass of water with a thermometer in the freezer overnight — A freezer holds food safely at 0 °F (−18 °C) or below, and the harvest cycle needs it that cold too.
What an owner can safely check
- Replace the water filter and run several litres through the dispenser — Flushing clears the air that stops a new filter delivering full flow.
Tools: replacement filter, jugAbout 20 min
- Check the shut-off arm or paddle is in the down position — A bag of frozen food leaning on it stops production with nothing broken.
About 5 min
- Empty the ice bin, defrost any fused block and restart the maker — Fused ice jams the ejector and makes a healthy machine look dead.
Tools: towels, coolerAbout 30 min
- STOP HERE if the next step needs a meter on the inlet valve or the ice maker out — That is where an owner check ends and a service call begins.
Before you open anything
Safety
Switch off the water supply before disturbing any line, and unplug the refrigerator or switch off its breaker before removing a panel, because a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Never thaw a frozen fill tube with anything hotter than warm water, and never with a naked flame near the cabinet. Do not force the ejector arm by hand: it is geared, and forcing it strips the drive.
When to call a technician
Call once the supply is open, the filter is fresh and the freezer holds temperature and the mould is still dry, because the next check is a meter on the inlet valve. Call straight away if you find water dripping anywhere along the supply line, because the line is under constant pressure and a slow drip does not stay slow. Parts come from a specialist rather than a general supplier, and the cosmetic parts are the slow ones, so confirm availability before committing to a repair.

What this page does not cover
This page covers the Heartland refrigerator as a class rather than one family or model line. Filter part numbers, ice maker module variants, fill tube routing and the supply fittings used on individual installations are deliberately not here. Where a family or model page exists for your unit, it is the more specific answer and the one to read first; the nearest pages of this class are linked just above.
