The short answer
Water under a Haier freezer is usually defrost water that could not reach its drain, not a broken part. On this build the platform is high volume and widely shared, so the parts are easy to get and the failure pattern is well known, which is why the drain and the seal lead the list below. Water at the front usually means the drain; water down the inside of the door usually means the seal.
What you observe
- A puddle at the front, under the door — The defrost drain is blocked and the water is taking the only route left.
- Water running down the inside of the door or lid — Condensation from a failed seal, not a plumbing fault.
- A wet patch at the back — The drain pan is displaced, cracked or simply overfull.
- NEAR MISS: water everywhere and softening contents — The cabinet is thawing because cooling failed. Read the cooling page first.
Causes, most likely first on this build
- Defrost drain blocked or frozen — Ranked first on this build: the drain on this platform is narrow and silts up with ordinary cabinet debris, which makes it the leak that turns up most.
- Manual defrost overdue, or the door left ajar — Second: a thick frost layer melts faster than the drain can take it once the cabinet warms at all.
- Door or lid seal no longer closing — Third: warm moist air pulled past a tired gasket condenses on every cold surface and runs.
- Cabinet leaning forward, so water runs out instead of to the drain — Last: a contributor rather than a cause, but it makes a marginal drain fail.
Check in this order, and why
- Find where the water is: front, back, or inside the door — Front points to the drain, back to the pan, inside the door to the seal.
- Look for ice on the cabinet floor near the drain hole — Ice there is the blocked drain caught early, and it confirms the diagnosis without tools.
- Test the seal with a sheet of paper all round — Do this second, because a failed seal produces water that is easily mistaken for a leak.

- Empty the cabinet and defrost fully with the door open and the power off — Several hours. This clears a frozen drain and tells you whether the drain was the cause.

Safety
Switch off at the breaker before kneeling in a wet area or moving a wet cabinet, and unplug it before removing any panel. Never chip at ice near the drain with a sharp tool, because the trough and the tubing behind it puncture easily. A loaded chest freezer is extremely heavy and a wet floor makes moving it genuinely dangerous, so empty it first and get help.
When to call a technician
Call once the drain runs free, the cabinet is level and the seal holds and water keeps arriving, because the next step is the drain trough behind the rear panel. Call at once if water is pooling near a socket or an extension lead, and switch off at the breaker before you go near it.
