The short answer
A Haier dishwasher leaving food or film on dishes is usually overloaded or blocked rather than broken: on a compact machine one tall item fouling the upper spray arm ruins a whole rack. The filter and the spray-arm jets are the next two, and both are owner cleans. Only a weak wash pump or a failed heater — a machine that never gets hot — is a service call.
What you observe
- One section clean, another untouched — A spray shadow. Something is blocking the arm.
- Gritty deposits redeposited over everything — The filter is loaded and dirty water is recirculating.
- White film or cloudiness on glassware — Hard-water scale or no rinse aid, not a mechanical fault.
- Dishes are clean but cold and wet at the end — Poor drying, which is a different fault from poor washing.
- NEAR MISS — water still standing in the tub — That is a drainage fault and it needs a different page.
Causes, most likely first on this brand
- Overloading or an item fouling the spray arm — First on a compact machine because the clearance between the upper arm and the top rack is small. A tall glass or a chopping board stops the arm turning, and a stopped arm sprays one spot for the whole cycle.
- Filter loaded with food debris — Second: a compact machine recirculates a small volume of water many times, so a dirty filter does more damage here than in a full-size tub.
- Blocked spray-arm jets — Third. Seeds, grit and scale plug the small bores, and the arm keeps turning while covering less and less of the rack.
- Wash temperature low, or no rinse aid in a hard-water area — Last, and it explains the film rather than the food: cool water leaves grease behind, and hard water without rinse aid leaves scale on everything.
Check in this order, and why
- Spin both spray arms by hand with the racks loaded — If either catches, you have found the fault before opening anything.
- Pull the filter and look at what is in it — Decides between a loading fault and a recirculation fault.
- Hold each arm up to the light and check the jets — Blocked bores are visible and clear with a cocktail stick.
- Check the rinse aid and, in hard water, the salt — Left until here because it explains film, not debris.

- Load the machine, then spin both arms by hand — Each must turn a full circle without touching anything.

Before you open anything
Safety
Switch off the breaker before removing the kickplate or reaching into the sump; a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off, and the junction box behind the kickplate is a live mains connection. Broken glass often ends up in a dishwasher filter, so wear gloves and look before you reach. Do not run the machine with the filter removed, and never mix dishwasher detergent with bleach products in the tub.
When to call a technician
Call when the arms spin freely, the filter and jets are clean, rinse aid is topped up and the dishes still come out dirty — that points at the wash pump or the heater, and both need a meter. Call also if the tub is cold at the end of a hot cycle, which is a heater or thermostat fault. Call immediately if the machine trips the breaker or you smell hot insulation during a cycle.
