The short answer
On a Gorenje dryer, clothes that come out damp are more often a restricted vent than a failed heater: lint builds in the duct until moist air cannot leave, and the machine then runs a full cycle without drying anything. A blocked vent is also the leading cause of dryer fires, so it is the first check on this page and not a formality.
What you actually observe
- Automatic cycles finish early but timed cycles dry — Moisture sensing rather than heating.
- Clothes come out hot but still wet — Moist air is not leaving the drum, so look at the duct and the filter.
- NEAR MISS: the drum does not turn at all — That is a belt, motor or door-switch fault and belongs on the page for a dryer that will not start.
The causes, most likely first on this brand
- A lint filter that is blinded rather than merely full — Fabric softener leaves an invisible film across the mesh that stops air passing even when the filter looks clean to the eye. Ranked first on a Gorenje dryer: narrow-depth cabinets leave very little clearance behind the machine, and that clearance is part of the design.
- A restricted or blocked exhaust vent — Lint accumulates along the duct and at the outlet flap until moist air cannot escape, so the drum stays humid and the cycle achieves nothing. Ranked second on a Gorenje dryer: European cycle logic is long and gentle, so a partial fault is tolerated for weeks and only the end of it is visible.
- Moisture sensor bars coated with softener residue — Automatic cycles end when the sensor reads dry, and a residue film on those bars fools the machine into ending a cycle far too early. Check in this order, and why this order
- Run water onto the filter mesh and see whether it passes straight through — Water that pools on the mesh instead of running through means the filter is blinded.
- Feel the airflow at the outside vent outlet during a heated cycle — Weak or cool air at the outlet with a hot cabinet is a blocked duct, and it is a fire risk.
- Note whether automatic cycles end early while timed cycles dry properly — That split is conclusive: the heat is fine and the sensing is not.
What an owner can safely check
- Wash the lint filter in warm soapy water and let it dry fully before refitting — This is the single most overlooked cause of poor drying and it costs nothing.

Unplug the dryer or switch off its breaker before removing any panel or reaching behind it. A blocked vent is the leading cause of dryer fires, so never run a machine you know is restricted, and never vent one into the room. Never use plastic or foil concertina ducting. On a gas dryer, if you smell gas: do not switch anything on or off, leave the building, and call the gas utility or emergency services from outside.
When to call a technician
Call once the duct is clear end to end, the filter passes water freely and the drum still comes up cold on a heated cycle — the heater, the thermal fuse and the cycling thermostat all mean opening the cabinet and testing at live terminals. Call immediately for a burning or scorched-lint smell, and do not run the machine again until it has been seen.
