Frigidaire Washer Water Inlet Valve Replacement Guide — Cost, Signs & DIY Tips
The Frigidaire washer water inlet valve is a dual-solenoid electromagnetic valve mounted at the rear of the machine where the household supply hoses connect. One solenoid controls hot water flow, the other controls cold. The control board energizes specific solenoid combinations to achieve the selected water temperature: hot solenoid only for Hot, cold only for Cold, both alternating for Warm.
EFLS Front-Load vs. FFTW Top-Load Differences
EFLS front-load: The valve fills through a pressurized jet directed into the detergent dispenser drawer. The water flows through the detergent tray, dissolving detergent, then enters the tub. Auto-Load Sensing on some models adds water incrementally — the washer fills partially, tumbles to compress the load, measures how much the water level dropped (absorbed by the clothes), and adds more if needed. This means fill time is longer than traditional washers and varies by load.
FFTW top-load: The valve fills directly into the tub. MaxFill is a feature that allows you to override the HE (High Efficiency) water-saving fill and use a full water level — useful for heavily soiled items or bulky loads. MaxFill adds a physical button or selector position that signals the board to fill past the Auto-Load Sensing level.

Symptoms of Inlet Valve Failure
- Washer does not fill — no water enters when a cycle starts. Could be: valve solenoid dead, water supply turned off, or inlet screen clogged
- Fills with cold water only on Hot setting — the hot water solenoid has failed. Cold solenoid works fine
- Fills with hot water only — the cold solenoid has failed. Warm and Cold cycles use the cold solenoid
- Very slow fill — inlet screen clogged with mineral deposits. Disconnect supply hoses and inspect the small mesh screens in the valve inlet ports
- Water enters when washer is off — solenoid diaphragm not sealing. Water trickles into the tub continuously. This can cause flooding — turn off supply valves until repaired
- E11 error code — fill error. The board commanded a fill but the water level did not rise within the expected time
Testing
- Unplug the washer. Turn off both water supply valves.
- Access the valve from the rear (remove rear access panel).
- Disconnect wire connectors from both solenoid coils.
- Multimeter on resistance: each coil should read approximately 500–1,500 ohms. Infinite = dead coil.
- Inspect inlet screens — remove supply hoses from the valve and look at the small mesh screens in each inlet port. Clean with vinegar if clogged.

Replacement
- Turn off both water supply valves. Unplug the washer.
- Disconnect supply hoses from the valve inlets at the rear. Water will drain from the hoses — have towels ready.
- Remove the rear access panel (Phillips screws) for better access.
- Disconnect the fill hose from the valve outlet (connects to the dispenser drawer or directly to the tub). Spring clamp — use channel-lock pliers.
- Disconnect both solenoid wire connectors.
- Remove the valve mounting bracket screws (2 Phillips).
- Install the new valve. Mount with bracket screws. Reconnect the fill hose with spring clamp. Reconnect solenoid wires. Reconnect supply hoses to correct ports (hot and cold are labeled on the valve body — do not reverse them).
- Turn on supply valves. Check for leaks at all connections.
- Plug in. Run a Hot cycle and a Cold cycle to verify both solenoids operate.
Tools: Adjustable wrench, Phillips #2, channel-lock pliers, towels. Time: 25–40 minutes.

Auto-Load Sensing and Fill Complaints
Many Frigidaire EFLS owners report "not enough water in the tub." This is normal HE operation — Auto-Load Sensing intentionally uses less water than traditional washers. The clothes should be damp and turning, not submerged. If you need more water for a specific load, use the MaxFill option on FFTW top-loaders, or select the Heavy Soil/Bulky cycle on EFLS front-loaders (these use more water).
Hard Water Prevention
Same as other Frigidaire water-using appliances: annual inlet screen cleaning extends valve life. If you have hard water, a water softener prevents mineral buildup in all water-connected appliances.

FAQ
Why won't my Frigidaire washer fill with water?
Check: water supply valves open? Inlet screens clogged? Solenoid coils read 500-1,500 ohms each? If all good, the control board may not be sending the fill signal.
Can one solenoid fail while the other works?
Yes. Hot and cold solenoids are independent. One can fail without affecting the other — resulting in only hot or only cold fill.
Why does my Frigidaire washer not use enough water?
Normal HE operation — Auto-Load Sensing intentionally minimizes water. For more water: use MaxFill (top-load) or Heavy Soil cycle (front-load).
What does E11 mean on my Frigidaire washer?
Fill error — water level did not rise in time. Check supply valves, inlet screens, and solenoid coils.
