Frigidaire Washer Thermostat (Thermistor) Replacement Guide — Cost, Signs & DIY Tips
Modern Frigidaire washers use an NTC thermistor for water temperature sensing — not a traditional bi-metal thermostat. The thermistor is a small probe mounted in the tub or sump area that measures water temperature by changing electrical resistance as temperature changes. The control board reads this resistance to determine the current water temperature and adjusts the inlet valve accordingly.
Older Frigidaire washers (pre-2010 mechanical timer models) may use a traditional bi-metal thermostat. If your washer has a digital display, it uses a thermistor.
How the Thermistor Controls Water Temperature
When you select "Hot" on the washer, the board opens the hot water inlet valve solenoid. The thermistor monitors the incoming water temperature. If the water is not reaching the target (typically 130°F for Hot), the board continues filling with hot water. If the thermistor reads the target temperature, the board stops filling. For "Warm," the board alternates between hot and cold inlet valves, using the thermistor to verify the blend reaches approximately 100°F.

Steam Option (EFLS Front-Load)
Gallery front-load washers with the Steam option have a front-mounted steam nozzle that injects steam into the drum during certain cycles. The steam is generated by a small heater element that boils water from the supply line. The thermistor confirms the steam temperature is reached before the board signals the cycle to proceed.
If the steam spray is weak or absent:
- The steam nozzle may be clogged with mineral scale — descale with vinegar
- The steam heater may have failed — test for continuity
- The thermistor may be reading a falsely high temperature, so the board thinks steam is already at temperature and does not energize the heater
Symptoms of Thermistor Failure
- Water always cold — thermistor reads falsely warm, so the board thinks hot water is already flowing
- Water always hot — thermistor reads falsely cold, so the board continues filling with hot water past the target
- Sanitize cycle aborts — the Sanitize cycle requires water to reach approximately 150°F. A failed thermistor cannot confirm this temperature, so the board aborts the cycle and may display an error
- Steam does not activate — on EFLS models with Steam, the board requires thermistor confirmation before activating steam functions

Testing
- Unplug the washer. Locate the thermistor — typically in the sump area or on the outer tub, accessed from the rear panel or through the lower front panel.
- Disconnect the 2-wire connector.
- Multimeter on resistance at room temperature: approximately 10,000–15,000 ohms (NTC).
- Place the thermistor probe in warm water: resistance should decrease as temperature rises.
- Infinite or zero or no change = failed thermistor.

Replacement
- Unplug the washer. Access the thermistor location (rear panel or lower front panel removal).
- Disconnect the 2-wire connector. Trace the wires if the connector is not immediately visible.
- Remove the thermistor from its mounting clip or grommet on the tub.
- Install the new thermistor in the same position. Ensure the sensing tip contacts the tub surface.
- Reconnect the wire connector. Reassemble panels.
- Run a warm wash cycle and verify the water temperature is appropriate.
Tools: Phillips #2, multimeter. Time: 15–25 minutes.
Steam Nozzle Descaling
If the steam function is weak, descale before assuming the thermistor has failed:
- Mix equal parts white vinegar and water
- Use a syringe or squeeze bottle to flush the solution through the steam nozzle opening
- Let it sit for 15 minutes, then flush with clean water
- Run a steam cycle and observe the spray

FAQ
Why does my Frigidaire washer always fill with cold water?
Test the NTC thermistor first (~10,000-15,000 ohms at room temperature). A failed thermistor reading "warm" prevents hot water fill. Also verify the hot water supply valve is open.
What does the Steam option do on Frigidaire washers?
Injects steam into the drum to help dissolve stains and sanitize. Uses a front-mounted nozzle powered by a small heater. Descale the nozzle with vinegar if spray weakens.
Can I use my Frigidaire washer without a working thermistor?
The washer will run but cannot regulate water temperature. Some cycles (Sanitize, Steam) may not function. Replace the thermistor for correct operation.
Is the Frigidaire washer thermistor the same as a thermostat?
Modern Frigidaire washers use a thermistor (variable resistance temperature sensor) rather than a traditional bi-metal thermostat. They are not interchangeable.
