Frigidaire Washer Door Latch (Door Lock) Replacement Guide — Cost, Signs & DIY Tips
Frigidaire front-load washers (EFLS series) use a door lock assembly with a wax motor mechanism (commonly part# 137353500). The wax motor is a small actuator that melts wax to move a locking lever — it takes 5–10 seconds to engage after the cycle starts, which is why you hear a click followed by a brief delay before the wash begins. Top-load washers (FFTW) do not have a door lock — the lid simply rests closed.
How the Wax Motor Lock Works
When the control board initiates a cycle, it sends voltage to the door lock wax motor. The wax element heats, expands, and pushes a locking lever across the door opening. A microswitch inside the assembly confirms to the board that the lock has engaged. Only after this confirmation does the board proceed to fill the tub.
When the cycle ends, the board cuts power to the wax motor. The wax cools and contracts, the lever retracts, and the door can be opened. This cooling takes 1–3 minutes — which is why the Frigidaire front-load door does not unlock immediately after the cycle ends.

Symptoms of Door Lock Failure
- dE error code — door error. The board sent the lock signal, but the microswitch inside the lock assembly did not confirm engagement. The washer will not proceed to fill
- Washer fills but immediately stops — intermittent lock contact. The lock engages initially, the board starts filling, then the microswitch loses contact and the board halts the cycle as a safety measure
- Door will not open after the cycle ends — the wax motor is stuck in the locked position. The wax did not contract, or the lever mechanism is jammed. Wait 5 minutes for the wax to cool. If still locked, unplug the washer for 10 minutes
- E21 error combined with dE — the board detects both a drain issue and a door issue. The door lock may be preventing the cycle from completing its drain sequence
- Burning smell from the lock area — the wax motor is overheating because the board keeps energizing it in a failed lock attempt. Disconnect power immediately
Testing the Door Lock
- Unplug the washer.
- Access the lock: on EFLS models, it is behind the door opening, attached to the front panel. Remove the outer clamp of the door boot seal (wire spring — compress with pliers), peel the boot back to reveal the lock assembly mounting screws.
- Remove the lock mounting screws (2 Torx T20 or Phillips screws, model-dependent).
- Pull the lock assembly partially out and disconnect the wire connector.
- The lock has multiple terminals. Test per the wiring diagram in the service sheet (inside the console). Key test: verify the microswitch closes when the lock lever is manually pushed to the locked position.

Replacement Procedure
- Unplug the washer.
- Open the door. Peel back the door boot seal from the front panel by compressing the outer wire clamp with pliers and sliding it off. Pull the boot forward to expose the lock assembly.
- Remove the 2 mounting screws holding the lock assembly to the front panel.
- Disconnect the wire connector from the lock.
- Install the new lock. Connect the wire harness first, then mount with screws.
- Reseat the boot seal — press it back into the channel around the door opening. Replace the outer wire clamp (the most frustrating part — use a boot clamp tool or a large flat-head screwdriver to walk the clamp into the channel).
- Plug in. Run a short cycle to verify the lock engages, the cycle proceeds, and the door unlocks after completion.
Tools: Pliers (for wire clamp), Phillips #2 or Torx T20, flat-head screwdriver. Time: 20–35 minutes.

Boot Seal Clamp Tips
The outer wire clamp on the door boot seal is notoriously difficult to reinstall. A boot clamp installation tool ($15 at appliance parts stores) makes this much easier. Without it, you can use a large flat-head screwdriver to lever the clamp into the seal channel section by section, but it is slow and frustrating.
Alternatively, some technicians replace the wire clamp with a large hose clamp (jubilee clip style) when the original wire clamp breaks or is too difficult to reinstall. This is a common field workaround.
FAQ
Why does my Frigidaire washer show dE error?
Door lock assembly did not confirm engagement. Check the lock mechanism and microswitch. Also verify the door is fully closed — the boot seal can prevent full closure if misaligned.
Why won't my Frigidaire washer door open after the cycle?
The wax motor is stuck locked. Unplug the washer for 10 minutes to allow the wax to cool and contract. If still stuck, the lock mechanism is jammed — replacement needed.
Is the door lock the same as the door latch on a Frigidaire washer?
On front-load (EFLS) models, the "door latch" is actually a door lock assembly with a wax motor. Top-load models (FFTW) do not have a door lock.
What is a wax motor?
A small actuator that uses heated wax expansion to move a lever. It is slow (5-10 seconds to engage) but reliable. Found in Frigidaire/Electrolux front-load washers and dishwashers.
