The short answer
On Frigidaire a cycle that ends early or stalls is most often a restricted vent duct or outside hood, not a failed control board. Ranked that way because the drum rides on glides and a felt seal that wear out on a predictable schedule, well ahead of anything electrical.
What you observe
- It stops at exactly the same point every time — Points at the control or a thermal device rather than at the load.
- The cycle ends after a few minutes with a damp load — The classic moisture-sensor signature, and the cheapest thing on the list to fix.
- NEAR MISS: it tumbles the whole cycle with no heat at all — That is a heating fault rather than a cycle fault, and it has its own page.
Causes, most likely first on Frigidaire
- The vent run or the outside hood is restricted — First on this platform, whose wear pattern puts cheap parts well ahead of expensive ones. A long duct packed with lint, or a flap held shut outside, makes the machine overheat and stop short. Cycles that have crept longer over months, then began stopping early, are describing exactly this.
- The programme selected is doing what it was asked to — Second, and the one this platform sees most often after the first. Eco, delicate and timed programmes all end with a load that is deliberately less than bone dry, and a cool-down phase at the end can feel like an early stop. Reading the selected programme settles it in seconds.
- The lint filter and its housing are restricting airflow — Third. A machine that cannot move air runs its thermal protection, cuts the heat and cycles off early.
- The thermistor, the control board or a thermal cut-out has failed — Last, and it is the reason the order above matters. It stops at the same point with a clean sensor, a clear filter, a clear vent and an appropriate programme.
Check in this order, and why
- Feel the air at the outside hood while the machine runs — Weak airflow outside is the answer, and it is the cause that carries a fire risk.
- Read the programme and the dryness level actually selected — It is free and it explains a machine that is not faulty at all.
- Pour water through the filter and watch whether it passes — Water that beads on the mesh names a blockage you cannot see, and it is free to check.
What an owner can safely check
- Disconnect the duct at the machine, clear the whole run and check the outside flap — Replace any crushed flexible duct with a smooth run where you can.
Tools: vacuum, screwdriver, duct brushAbout 60 min
- Select a standard cotton or timed programme at a higher dryness level and compare — If the load comes out dry, the machine was never at fault.
About 15 min
- Wash the lint filter, dry it fully, and vacuum the housing below it — Refit it dry: a wet filter restricts airflow just as badly as a blocked one.
Tools: vacuum, warm soapy waterAbout 20 min
- STOP HERE if the next step needs a meter on live terminals — That is where an owner check ends and a service call begins.
Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the dryer or switch off its breaker before removing any panel or reaching into the lint housing. A restricted vent is a fire risk and not a performance complaint: stop using the machine if the cabinet feels hot or you smell scorching. If you smell gas at a gas dryer, do not switch anything on or off, leave the building and call the gas utility or the emergency services from outside.
When to call a technician
Call when the sensor is clean, the filter and vent are clear, the programme is right and the machine still stops at the same point, because that puts the fault in a thermistor, a thermal cut-out or the control. Call immediately if the cabinet is hot, if you smell scorching, or if a gas machine smells of gas.

What this page does not cover
This page covers the brand and the dryer class, not one family or model line. Where a family-specific or model-specific page exists for your unit, that page is the more specific answer and it takes precedence over this one. Not here: part numbers, wiring colours and component locations, which differ by family.
